They were probably far hairier and less human looking than the reconstructions.

Well there were slight variants from what I read. For the most part they associate the more "classic" look mostly with western variant. There is the vindija neanderthal from croatia; La Ferrassie as a "classic" look :

All the way to more "transitional" neanderthal skulls like Skhul with more "human" skull shape like Skhul and Qafzeh skulls:

I wouldn't be surprised if the neanderthals themselves were quite diverse phenotypically. That is why if each person is distinct when it comes down to genes that we inherited from each neanderthal derivative that could be expressed differently phenotypically that was introgressed that varies from individual to individual.

Both, as the Shanidar cave neanderthal in the first photo is older than the European variant found.

Most likely the first one was the proper Neanderthal.

Genetic traces of red hair has been found in Neanderthals, but I've never heard of blonde results.Blonde hair and light skin did not exist until the Neolithic.

There are articles I have read that blonde hair was amongst them. Same thing with paler or fair complexion.

Actually neanderthals did have the genes for pale skin and red hair, both reconstructions above are wrong but the second one further down is closer, they also had both the genes for bue eyes and brown eyes within the same indiviual meaning green eyes are most likely, but they could have also have been hazel (light brown)
I've been studying Neanderthals for over 20 years here's my Artistic rendering:
