Some Europeans get a little pseudo-mong(ish) look in the eye area when they get older.
Both from the skin around the eye naturally gets a little more ''droopy'' with age but also some of them from working outside in the sun squinting their eyes almost their entire life which makes it kinda ''stuck'' like that.

My grandpa had really thin, squinty eyes when he was old but on picture from when he was younger they were big and round/squarish.

He doesn't look Asian to me. This is a common look in north western Europe. My grand father looked like that but with darker hair and paler skin. His skin looks awfully dark or dirty. Not sure. I would guess him by the face to be Welsh. He looks similar [without the beard] to a Welsh professor I once had.
