Tired as I am of the uninspiring genre movies of Hollywood, I thought it would be a good idea to start this thread to explore European cinema more broadly. Recommend movies from or about your native land, that you think are worth watching even for foreigners.

I'll begin with a couple of suggestions:

http://titulky.icr.cz/mini/Kukushka.jpg

Kukushka - The Cuckoo - Käki

Although the movie is a Russian production, it takes place in North Eastern Finland and much of the dialogue (or monologue, rather) takes place in Finnish and Sámi. It is the story of two soldiers, a Finn and a Russian, during the closing stages of Finland's involvement in the war, who come together in a remote part of Lapland with a Sámi woman. Since they all speak different languages, they cannot understand each other and misunderstandings abound. It is a suttle comedy and a sweet movie.

Häjyt - The Tough Ones (silly translation, imo).

This movie is about two best friends who since an early age start a life of crime and violence. The movie is set in modern-day Ostrobothnia, which was home to the historical phenomenon of the Häjyt, a kind of booze & blades culture of violence that suddenly appeared in the region during the 19th century. One of the best Finnish movies in my opinion, as far as the acting goes.

Malev
http://movies.ee/pildid/malev1.jpg

A fake historic epic on the Middle Ages and Estonia's not-so-glorious past.
Year 1208. The first Eastward enlargement of Europe is under way. Brutal forces of the Teutonic Order are steadily marching on. In their path live a simple and peaceful people, whose main pastimes include cultivating the earth, singing and, if possible, doing both at the same time. They are the Estonians. Ignorant in the ways of war, they find an unlikely leader in a young boy with Catholic upbringing. In their fight for freedom, the Estonians encounter numerous obstacles, including the Germans, French, Russians and, worst of all, the Latvians. Will they succeed in defeating their enemies or will they experience a cultural awakening?

Produced for the 90th anniversary of the Republic of Estonia, this feature film tells the story of the attempted Communist coup which took place in Tallinn on 1 December 1924.

This is historical action-drama with leading parts played by the singer Liisi Koikson, the young actor Sergo Vares, Tõnu Kark, Mait Malmsten, Ain Lutsep and other great Estonian artistes. Also several famous Russian actors (eg Jevgeni Knjazev, Roman Kalkajev) participate in the movie.

The Singing Revolution
http://www.watchmojo.com/blogs/images/thesingingrevolution.jpg

The Singing Revolution is a documentary film created by James Tusty and Maureen Castle Tusty about the nonviolent Singing Revolution in Estonia where hundreds of thousands of Estonians gathered publicly, between 1986 and 1991, in an effort to end decades of Soviet occupation. The revolutionary songs they created anchored Estonia’s non-violent struggle for freedom.

Congratulations, Rippu, this is a great Thread.

I will recommend not only from my country but that paint it, anthropological portraits, to my point of view as Spaniard and lover of my ancient culture/s, ABOUT the real traits of my Country and my People (sorry, but I will ban Almodóvar from my list, despite his films paint a very realistic Spaniards, in particular from la Mancha, as me and his characters are like clones of many people and family I have. He already tired me with by many reasons... even las chicas del montón... but that is another history).

For now I will recommend this one, shared with you in a previous post.

Navarra. España. A film where are shown the real country-life of many regions of Spain, as it was for thousand of years. The same people, the same traditions... but something new, the modern capitalism. The call of the city.

And...

a MASTERPIECE, from the literature of one of the best writers about the Castilians, the recently deceased Miguel Delibes.

Elling is the only one out of those I've seen. A quirky and a funny movie, and unbelievably enough, the sequels are okay too. :)

"Come and see" (1985) is probably one of few films made by Belarusfilm that cannot be referred to as BS. Not that I would recommend it, but watching the film can be a very unusual experience. It's about Nazi war crimes in the East.

It is certainly a kind of horror. Wikipedia describes it as "psychological horror". In some countries one can watch it only if he/she is already 18. I also would not recommend it to Germans (no joke), because war criminals there speak German and it may create the wrong impression that the film is somehow anti-German.

Reportedly Quentin Tarantino regards the film as the best film about WWII.

comes to mind first for me. It's about a boy in a pretty miserablish sort of life who finds a kestrel and trains it. It's set in Yorkshire, in a sort of world I can remember from when I was little. It's sad in parts, naturally, but bittersweet and uplifting in others.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kes_(film)

Both the film and the book provide an authentic portrait of life in the mining areas of Yorkshire of the time. The school used as the main set was St. Helens School, Athersley South, but has since been renamed Edward Sheerien School.

Set in Barnsley, the film contains broad local dialects. The cast have authentic Yorkshire accents (Barnsley to be precise) and used or knew the dialects. The extras were all hired from in and around Barnsley. David Bradley, who played Billy Casper, and Freddie Fletcher, who played Jud, were both born in Barnsley.[citation needed] Lynne Perrie was from Rotherham, which has a slightly different accent to Barnsley. The film is often used in schools for classes on English language. The DVD version of the film has certain scenes dubbed over with fewer dialect terms than in the original. (Sheffield Star circa 2003)

Some are very good. I don't go mad for cinema, but I've seen most of the older ones, down the years. :p

Excellent Finnish/Swedish film about a boy who is brought to Sweden from Finland during World War 2. I love this film. It is very authentic and touching, even for a "foreigner".
"1943: Nine-year-old Eero whose father is killed during the war is brought to Sweden to foster parents to his protection like thousands of other Finnish children." IMDB (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0343221/plotsummary)
