With Beijing waging an escalating war on dissent, five women are detained for planning a peaceful protest against sexual harassment

Britain has added its voice to growing calls for Beijing to release five female activists who were arrested in early March after planning a protest against sexual harassment.

“We urge China to release all those detained for exercising their rights to freedom of expression, in line with China’s Constitution and international human rights commitments,” a Foreign Office spokesperson said.

The British government was “deeply concerned” at the women’s continued imprisonment “for peacefully demonstrating against sexual harassment”.

“We are particularly concerned by reports that they have been denied due legal process, and at least one, Wu Rongrong, denied access to adequate medical care while in detention.”

Wu Rongrong, Li Tingting, Wei Tingting, Zheng Churan and Wang Man were taken into custody on the eve of International Women’s Day on March 8. Friends and fellow activists say they had planned to distribute stickers and leaflets that called for an end to sexual harassment.
