View Full Version : Does Norway overlaps with Britain or not?

Have read how Norwegians picked up some Celtic elements, but not sure how significant it is. Since new studies on British Isles show Scandinavians left little genetic imprint (except on islands if not mistaken), did it work the other way? Or not?

How close or distant are Norwegians to Brits compared to other Scandinavians and Icelanders?

many Norwegians on the SW coast look similar to Scots or vice versa, imo. but Norway has also Baltid input. there is overlapping, I guess, but less than expected

Genetically, Norwegians most likely do overlap with some Scots. Less so with England, who are more like their Southern neighbours, from Germany to France.

Western Norwegians and Scots overlap to a degree.

It does. Two-dimensional representation places most Norwegians directly northwards of Brits from London, but there is still some overlap. Plus, as has been said here before, Scots would probably be way closer due to relatively recent "mixing".

I don't think that overlaps is a good choise of word, norwegians are rather closer to Brtits than other Scandos, if we go after anthropology west norwegians are usually put into North Atlantic group, which includes Brits, Benelux and some bordering areas, if we go after genetic calcs Norwegians are a bit more N. Atlantic and less baltic than Swedes, which makes them closer to Brits.

N. A. Baltic
Swedes 48.5 31
Scotts 53 23
Norwegians 51.1 28.6

They are also closer to Brits in K8, and have more R1b U106, which is typical NW Euro haplogroup.

On K8 they slightly over lap West Scots & very much so with Orcadians. But no overlap at all with the English samples.

I'll add that this doesn't mean completely from Celtic slaves or from the vikings. But an older Mesolithic link that can be found in the Iron Age Brit shared with Norwegians.

Though these tests are still 'early doors'. This is the direction it is going in.

That's why i said similarity is a better word than overlap, i agree on the point of similarity being caused rather by ancient stuff than anything new.

Probably with Scotland and northeastern England. Less so with southern England and Wales.

I've come across many Norwegians both famous and civilian that look exactly like English people even moreso than the English look to Germans so probably.

This is the answer I was looking for :)

It depends on where in Scandinavia you are looking. Yes Norwegians tend to show some relationships with Brits and that is mainly because it was Norwegian Vikings who settled in parts of Britain mainly in the Western and Northern Isles of Scotland. On the other hand Norwegians also took back native British salves to Norway at various points in time during the Viking Age. There is probably a fairly significant amount of Danish Viking blood in parts of England as maybe Scotland as well. Now when it comes to Sweden there is probably not as much Swedish Viking influence but there probably is some as the Norse certainly did move around quite a bit. On the whole Sweden tend to share more links with Finland and the Baltic but then again there were also many Finns who have settled in Sweden over time as well. A lot of all of this shared ancestry may point to more distantt shared pre-historic roots though.
