Two men are at large after they robbed a Danish cyclist. One man allegedly pinned her to the ground while the other rode away with her bicycle.
A 19-year-old Danish cyclist was left in shock on Thursday afternoon when she was attacked and robbed by two men at the Voortrekker Monument ahead of the 2015 Stihl South African Mountain Bike Championships.
According to the team’s publicist, Affinity Strategic Communication, the Danish National Mountain Bike team was practising for the second round of the championships, to take place at the monument on Saturday.
“The rider, whose name cannot be mentioned for her own protection, was on the track with her teammates and their coach, preparing for the championships, when two men attacked her. One pinned her to the ground while the other rode away with her bicycle,” said strategic communication manager Phillip van Heerden.
According to Van Heerden the bicycle is worth more than R50 000.
He said the team’s coach, Mads Bodker was fortunately nearby the scene due to a flat tyre.
Bodker noticed a man driving with the teenager’s bicycle, he said.
Van Heerden said police were notified and a helicopter was sent to the scene.
“One criminal was caught when he was climbing over the fence.”
According to Bodker, the cyclist was deeply affected by the traumatic event.
“She is going through terrible shock. We come from a country where such a thing is totally outrageous and came to South Africa with a whole different perception and a sense of safety,” he said in a statement.
The Danish cyclist will continue to take part in the championships on Saturday, he said.
“We will ensure that there is someone close to her during the championship.”
Police spokesperson Constable Lerato Ngomane could not confirm or provide more information about the incident.
