Julia Gillard becomes Australia's first female prime minister

Sudden change of leadership comes after Kevin Rudd steps down rather than face Labor party ballot

Australia has its first female prime minister, Julia Gillard, after Kevin Rudd stepped down as Labor party leader, avoiding a ballot he was certain to lose.

In an extraordinary day in Australian politics, Gillard told a media conference in Canberra's Parliament House she was "truly honoured" to become prime minister.

The 48-year-old who came under attack in 1998 when she entered parliament for being single and childless, said it was also an important milestone for Australian women.

"I think if there's one girl who looks at the TV screen over the next few days and says 'Gee, I might like to do that in the future', well that's a good thing," Gillard told reporters.

Gillard, who was born in Wales and came to Australia in the 1960s with her parents, said she accepted her new role with "the greatest humility, resolve and enthusiasm" because she believed a good government was losing its way....

As someone who lives in a country with both a female prime minister and a female president, I can tell you that female politicians are not, unfortunately, any more noble, insightful, impartial nor any less greedy or prone to corruption and nepotism than male ones. All in all I think a person's gender is of only a minor significance when it comes to politics.

Which party did you compulsory vote for required by Aussie law to have the prime minister indirectly chosen?

You have my prayers, Bridie hen ;).

Gillard may be worse than Rudd. Gingers aren’t to be trusted, and she is one of them. Women in their 40s such as Gillard have menstrual cycles that are longer and change a lot that could affect political decisions. They need all the prayers they can get.

Women don’t belong in politics.

Come again? (This time, in English please. ;))

Women don’t belong in politics.Very convincing arguments there, Franz. Let's sum them up:

*People with red hair can't be trusted.
*Pre-menopausal women have longer menstrual cycles.

Oh yes, now I can really see that women don't belong in politics. Thanks for clarifying that in such an informed and educated manner.

Which party did you vote for (not that it mattered) unless you got a fine for not doing it? Australians vote for the party not the person. They had no part in the election of Gillard. She was elected unopposed. Better? ;)

Ah-ah! :D Better. ;)

Well, the Labour party is in power at the moment (of whom Gillard is now the leader). It's considered left wing (as expected ;)).

Humans don’t belong in politics.

Politics is a natural element of the human social structure. Deciding on what to eat for dinner with the family is just as political as deciding whether to nuke your neighbouring country for the economic embargoes they place on you.

I am pleased that Australia now has a female Prime Minister among its ranks. Not because I think that women make better politicians, but because I think a balance is a good thing.

However, I must say that I don't count Julia Gillard as being a whole woman, since she's not, and will never be, a mother. So I'm not so sure that she will be able to bring the balance that Australian politics needs. However, she does serve as establishing a precedent for the future.

I am pleased that Australia now has a female Prime Minister among its ranks. Not because I think that women make better politicians, but because I think a balance is a good thing.

Balance is the key word , save the exceptions (pre-natal hormonal influence , the environment , the experiences during the infancy) that could turn off the inner attitude , women and men are actually different in the way they approach problems , men tent do be assertive and risky-taking , women more "social" you know.
A society imho works better if it well balanced between these two psychologies , regardless if one is good or bad , that's doesn't matter with one's gender , I usually have experienced that first generation women are more into hardworkin' and honesty in doing their job , maybe because they're pioneer and have to demonstrate the others that they deserved that job , but already with the second generation they tend to resemble males , there's no more a clear difference in good and bad behaviours.

Are you kidding me?

Yep. The sooner the AI's are running things for us the better.

Unfortunatelly and incredibelly that statement is a sad truth that I regularelly thank about on Spanish cases specially mind disturbing. For example cases related with Spanish Constitution explicitely forbidding any gender-based discrimination. Skiping passed away situations like exclusively-masculine Military service concurrently with female entrance in Military academies and talking about the present: Socialdemocratic gov made a law change for which home violence is less severely punished when offender is woman. So, taking into account the big salaries Constitutional Tribunal members (supposedly for being respected lawyers), chances were that bizarre sample of contemporary feminazism of being unanimously declared unconstitutional as if they were a plain simple AI program with natural language just by abstracting the innherent discrimination on a law enforcing gender-biased penalties then matching it with Constitutional ban on gender-discrimination laws. Obviously they declared it was all right. Next time if software is not yet developed, let's replace them for monkeys rewarded with peanuts...indeed a more spontaneous, egalitarian and honourable collective. :D

Ps. Fair women at politics...OK. Feminazis whores, please, let your dirty hands out of it and don't worry: male politicians are too "wise"(in a Mafia way) to resign appealing to a half of electorate population...even with radically unfair tactics like the aforementioned.
