I saw there was a gross thread about beer, so why not make a thread about something that is actually good? Like wine.

There are multiple types, of course. I usually opt for the sweeter wines like Merlot or Pinot Noir. Merlot is the safe option for a Latin American, considering it's relatively common in Chile, and Chilean wine is amazing (SORRY ARGENTINA!)

I prefer red wine, as the others don't do much for me.

I haven't found a favorite brand as of yet, but I admit Barda (Argentinian) has a pretty damn good Pinot Noir for the $50-60 price range.

What about you? What are your favorite types of wine? What brands do you recommend?

I tried wine ONCE.....Forgot the taste of it though but remembered it was much sweeter tasting than beer if I'm recalling correctly.

Wouldn't mind trying it again though...What do you recommend for a newbie to wine who is on the other hand a fan of Kool-Aid, Coca-Cola, and Root-Beer-Float? lol

I've always been a very big fan of red wine. White simply doesn't do it for me.

Fortunately, Australian wines are very good. Unfortunately, I can't afford a wine habit :P Cabernet sauvignon and Merlot are my favourites. I tried a sparkling red the other day which was a strange concept for me, but I ended up quite enjoying it.

Depends! If you like sweeter drinks, then Merlot and Pinot Noir are awesome! Though I admit Pinot Noir is better (A little harder to find though, at least in my area.) I can't recommend any brands since I don't know what you guys get in England, but from the European wines I tasted La Bourgogne was amazing! I'm sure they have it in England, though I tasted it at a family friend's house so I'm not sure if that's the case!

As for types, if you like sweeter stuff, I definitely recommend Pinot Noir, go for something rich if you want to tone down the acidity (Which is often preferable, but some say rich wine might be a tad strong--Not in my opinion, I personally think the less acidity, the better.)

Pinot Noir tends to be my favorite variety, but it really depends on the brand. If you're trying to get drunk and don't want to spend a lot of money, but also don't want something completely terrible, Rex Goliath is a pretty good bottle to go with.

I hate sparkling red! I just hate sparkling drinks in general! D:
Never tried Australian wine, but I heard positive things about it! What kinds do you guys usually make?
Cebernet is good, though not one of my faves. Merlot, as I have mentioned before, is pretty awesome. Pinot Noir is still my fave though.

I generally don't like sparkling drinks in general, but it was different, and I love trying new things. Maybe that distracted me from the actual taste :P
Australia produces most wines, but especially Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Semillon, Pinot noir, Riesling, and Sauvignon blanc. Definitely give it a try sometime (Barossa Valley is our most famous wine region).

Wine fan over here too!.

I do consume some one or two specific lables my fave ones are the Marques del Riscal, Faustino V, Sangre de Toro (Spaain) Mouton Cadet (France), Casa Madero, Chateau Domeq (Mexico). Casillero del Diablo, (Chile).

I prefet the merlot over other ones although I don't reject a good Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmerene nor Pinot Noir.

There are somme very good Mexican labels from Guadalupe Valley in Baja.

Thanks for the recommendation, I think I'll go for the Pinot Noir. Am very curious as to how my system will respond to it and its sweetness / kick.

Lol the more you talk about how beer is inherently bitter, the more I start to realize and register it in my virtual tastebuds, making me want to try the Pinot Noir all the more. I'll be stopping by the grocery to check it out sometime, thankz again for the recommendation

Alsatian Riesling is my favourite. I don't like real 'oaky' tasting wines or overly dry ones.

As most of the labes I like are wines of 12, 20-60 bucks per bottle I go for a cheapest and acceptable option as day to day wine:

http://mercadoselroble.com/mercados/productos_grandes/7501053646823.jpg

It costs me about 12 bucks per gal at Costo and I can enjoy drinking an acceptable good wine on daily basis, to uncork one or two bottles of about 15-20 bucks everyday is a luxury I cannot afford anymore....:(

There are labels such as "Vino de Piedra", a Baja Califonian wine, one of the so called Author wines, it is about 60 bucks per bottle and I reserve it for special ocassions.

The best mexican wine I've tasted, by far. Hugo d'Acosta you rock! Thanks.

I like pinot noir, malbec, and zinfandel. Don't care much for white, maybe a rare glass now and then.

Wine generally sucks. Except for this, on ice:

I don't like wine that much. Most of the time wine makes me feel queasy and it gives me a headache. Surprisingly, wine coolers don't give me that queasy feeling. I'm more of a beer man. I would choose a beer over a glass of wine any day.

Bud with all due respect you can suck my balls lmao. How am I poorly educated? What does supposedly being poorly educated have to do with wine making me feel queasy? We all have our own likes and dislikes when it comes to alcohol. Since when is beer low class? Why should I drink something that makes me feel bad just to give off the impression i'm some fancy, rich high class aristocrat?

Wine is for pure kaffirs. Chaste people like myself do not indulge in such lowly behavior.

It depends for what though.

Rivera del Duero is one of my favourite DDO (Denominacion de origen); They have fantastic Rosados and Verdejos to stroll the old town in a "chatos and pinchos" pilgrimage. They also produce some of the best tintos (reds) in the world, which contrary to popular believe, go very well with some fine "pescados" del Cantabrico. A simple supper I do some times here is a scramble of egg and a can of Gulas al ajillo (a Spanish baby-eel shaped surimi-style dish) and a bowl of aceitunas pacenses, those that look like they have burst open. This works as "entrantes" or as we say in my town "tentempies" while the merluza (haddock) in salsa verde is slow-cooking in the oven. All of this washed with a nice Crianza from southern Burgos.

The haddock of course isn't imported from the Cantabric, but rather fished in the northern sea....but hey...perks of living this far. It's not the same, and perhaps works better battered and served wih fries and mushy peas...but for a Spanish night it'll have to do :P
