A conversation with the Pennsylvania crowd in the ChatBox sparked this. How many of you have flags that are strictly ethnic flags, flags that are purely ethnic and not governmental?

We've got two official flags so far. This one was adopted by the Canadian Acadians at the Second Acadian National Convention in 1884. It is the French flag plus a star, representing the Stella Maris, Mary.

This one was designed to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the arrival of the Acadians in Louisiana. The fleur-de-lis represents the French heritage, the star is Mary, and the castle represents the help that the Spanish gave us in relocating to Louisiana.

The flag of the Pennsylvania Germans (sometime called 'the Pennsylvania Dutch', incorrectly, of course). "Die Pennsylfaanisch Deitsch Faahne" created by "Die Grossdaadi Grundsow Lodge" (The Grandfather Groundhog Lodge) and co-sponsored by other affiliated Pennsylvania German organizations. Dedicated Oct.6, 1989 in Lehigh County Courthouse, Allentown, Pennsylvania.

Fairly recently, but I like the fact that we at least have one. :thumb001:

Gott im himmell! Ah so that's what that means.
My grandfather always says that phrase and I never thought about what it meant until now.

Whoops, ignore me. Don't mean to derail the thread.

Well, everyone knows the Québec flag, but I suppose that counts as governmental. Once upon a time it would have been considered the flag of ethnic québécois but no more.

I suppose there are the various versions of the Québec flag that have been flown over the centuries:
Used by the French Canadian rebels in the Lower Canada rebellion:

http://www.mef.qc.ca/images/DRAPEAU%20PATRIOTE.gif

I like that one as I have an ancestor who fought in the rebellion and was hanged for it.

There's also these two:

Like the above but with the sacred heart in the middle as a symbol of French Canada's Catholicism

And the Franco-Ontarian flag (a fleur-de-lis and a trillium to represent both provinces):

The flag of Sardinia, popularly known in Sardinia also as the Four Moors flag, is the officially recognized flag of the Autonomous Region of Sardinia.

The flag consists of a St George's Cross (used in the middle ages by the Crusaders) surrounded by 4 cut off heads of Moors executed.

According to the Spaniard tradition, the four moors' symbol appeared first in the celebrations following the victory in the Battle of Alcoraz by King Peter I of Aragon and Navarre in 1096, where the four moors refer to the Arab defeat by his hand. The Sardinian tradition instead dates the origin of the symbol in 1017, as a banner given by Pope Benedict II to the Pisans in order to help the Sardinians by the attacks from the Saracens led by Mujahid al-Amiri.

The current flag of the Repubic of Serbia has its roots in the old monarchy. A truly ethnic Serbian flag would fly without the crest on it i.e. the flag the Serbian Republic entity of BiH currently fly and the defunct Serbian Republic of Krajina.

No they seem to be red lilies (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuphar_lutea) (plural in Frisian: pompeblêden). Each one is representing one mediaeval Frisian "land" (Frisia consisted of several lands) I am not sure about Denmark though ?

I guess our national flag is the closest thing to an ethnic flag for us Norwegians:

The Mercian flag is in my sig below. It's a combination of the Cross of St Alban, used heraldically for Mercia since the 13th century, and the Eagle of Leofric, Earl of Mercia in the 10th century.

We're all the same ethnicity here, yet the autonomous communities of of Azores and Madeira, besides the flag of the Portuguese Republic, have their own flags:

Região Autónoma da Madeira
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/a/a4/Flag_of_Madeira.svg/800px-Flag_of_Madeira.svg.png
Blue represents the insularity, yellow represents Madeira's mild climate and the Cruz de Cristo (Christ Cross) is an honor to the Portuguese explorers who discovered Madeira (João Gonçalves Zarco, the main one), who were members of the Portuguese Order of Christ, which suceeded the Templar Knights here.

Região Autónoma dos Açores
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/6/6c/Flag_of_the_Azores.svg/748px-Flag_of_the_Azores.svg.png
The blue and white are the colors of the flag of the Portuguese liberal monarchy, since it was in the Azores that its approval by decree was signed. The Portuguese shield simbolizes the connection of the archipelago to mainland Portugal, the goshawk (Açor) represents the bird that gave name to the archipelago and the nine stars represent the nine inhabited islands.

The Arrano Beltzia (In English: Black Eagle) was the flag of the Kingdom of Pamplona.

The flag of the Kingdom of Navarra, the successor state to the Kingdom of Pamplona. The golden chains symbolize the chains of the Moorish King Miramamolín that were taken and destroyed by Sancho the Strong after the Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa. The Green Emerald is the emerald that Miramamolín wore on his turban.

The Ikurrina is perhaps the most widely known symbol of the Basque People. It was designed in 1894 by the Arana brothers as a flag for an independent Basque Country. The red ground symbolizes the Basque people ; the green cross represents the Oak of Guernica, and over them, the white cross, God's symbol of Basque Catholic devotion. Today, this is the official flag of the Basque Autonomous Community.

We've got two official flags so far.

Doesn't it take a government to make it official?

Anyways, I nominate these flags, which are pretty much used by the same people:
