Leading Iranian generals have threatened Saudi Arabia and the U.S. in response to Saudi attacks on Iranian-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen.

The commander of Iran’s Basij Force, Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Naqdi, has threatened Saudi Arabia over the country’s attacks on the Houthi rebels in Yemen, comparing the Al-Saud dynasty to toppled Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein. Naqdi also threatened the American presence in the region.

The Basij Force is comprised of paramilitary volunteer battalions attached to the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps. They are ideologically devoted to maintaining the Islamic Revolution.

Brig. Gen. Naqdi said “Imposing war on Yemen will, God willingly, have no result other than Saddam's fate for the aggressors and the US that is the direct sponsor of this crime will have to leave the region forever after losing its puppet, the Al Saud regime.”

His remarks came on the heels of similar threats made by other high ranking members of the Iranian political and military establishment.

More proof that the Iranian regime is unhinged, and any deals with them are impossible. After all, they're the Shiite version of the ISIL.

Unfortunately for the Iranians, their tough talking is not and cannot be supported with a capacity for commensurate action. Unfortunately for those interested in truth, many observers outside Iran seem to take the hype surrounding "Iranian power" a little too seriously, in some cases because they are personally opposed to American hegemony (i.e. it aligns with their hopes and dreams).

Iran can make life difficult for her adversaries, support other governments like Assad's in Syria, add to the destabilisation of the region and spread of "terrorism", flash their badge and pull over at unarmed transport ships etc. but not much beyond that. Iran does not have the capacity to force a Western withdrawal from the middle east region, even if the House of Saud falls.
