View Full Version : What is your favourite country in Europe

Mortimer
05-10-2015, 05:48 AM
you can choose only one, even if you like all or many choose only the one you like the most if any. And you cant choose your own, if you have two nationalities or are permanent resident in a other country you cant choose either of them. Because then everyone would do that. I need to think a bit first will tell my opinion later. Go ahead.

I was thinking maybe England because I'd feel like I was in a completely foreign country but where I could understand everything that they were saying at the same time.

Otherwise my choice goes to Germany.

I am not saying one country, but I have always been interested in the smaller central European countries, basically that made up the Austro-Hungarian empire.

I'd have a much easier time telling you countries I despise in Europe. I like the histories of European countries and people, but I tend to dislike most europeans i meet. If you asked me this question before WWI, I'd probably choose France. No way would I as of now though.

Im going to cheat and say Britain or British Isles

like another poster said, it wouldn't seem foreign to Americans ,even if different

plus I know some of it, just from a friend who has family in London

but most of all, I genuinely like British and Irish people, throughout.

I don't think most Brits and Irish realize how much, at least some Americans , really like them

and the added affect, that, culturally, historically, and ancestrally , America as a nation, or as a whole, is more like them, than anything else, and its from all over the Isles,-
England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales, not just one

but still, if not even if for that, I cant speak for all Americans, but at least some really just, genuinely like British people and Irish etc....

plus, in a very basic way, we probably, know more, about Britain, Ireland, broadly speaking, than any other country or region in Europe.

and I would like to learn more about things and people throughout the British Isles too, if I went there.

but it's hard to choose just one country or region

I find it difficult to choose only one as I really like the look of France, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Norway, Switzerland, Austria, Italy (in the cooler northern region,) Finland, Denmark... (to name some that I like the look of the landscapes and cultures.) I think I'd choose Norway though as I saw a video about the weather raining there for weeks non-stop, and that would suit me well as I dislike strong sunlight and I love rain and I'd love to see the Northern Lights, plus Norway ranks as the top nation in the world for quality of life and they're independently governed outside of the EU, like Iceland and Switzerland. But then, Switzerland and France are so beautiful too, and France is a republic who got rid of their monarchy and they have a great national healthcare system and good living standards.... I can't decide.

Now I'd probably choose Finland or Norway. High standard of living, beautiful nature, clean, not overpopulated, peaceful etc.

I have as of late been enamored with Scotland. The beautiful scenery and the great people. I recently got to be part of a Scottish wedding and they draped me in their clan colors and let me be fully immersed in the celebration. I also got to partake in the "blacking" of the groom before the wedding.. which is essentially covering him in oil, mud, and cow shit haha. I was taught to Scottish 2-step by the grooms mother, and almost puked from "barreling". I also got a drunken history of their clan from the grooms father... which was a sept of Clan McLaren, and by the end of the weekend I was made an honorary clansmen (it involved a lot of drinking), and I wrestled the grooms brother haha. I enjoyed it so much so, I have begun planning a trip to the highlands next spring :)

Lithuania and Latvia are not as expensive as let's say some west European countries : Italy, France, England. There maybe discounts for some tours, since Lithuania and Latvia lost many tourists from Russia in the last 12-18 months. The Baltic countries are worth to visit. I visited Estonia and Latvia in the past. But never Lithuania. :( I got to visit Vilnius, Kaunas, Klaipeda and regional Lithuania.

Historically, I like most countries in Europe for varying reasons, but due to my slightly conservative nature, I have a hard time seeing anything in common between the old Catholic Ireland and the one that now has 1/3 of its babies being born out of wedlock. Not that I'm a staunch Catholic who follows every rule to the line, but it does show a great change in their culture on a widescale level. (I don't judge people on an individual basis on such matters, but I think when it becomes a trend, it says something negative).

I used to like the conservatism and nationalism (not the extreme nationalism, but toned down type) of eastern european countries, but I've met too many airheads from these places who ruin any romanticizations I previously had of these people.

So I don't know, maybe Ireland or Italy. If Basque Country were a legit choice, I'd choose them since Basques have retained their culture in the face of great adversity quite impressively.

Just in XVII century was the time when the moriscos were expelled from Spain, and many of them ended up in the current Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco, &c...

If Visage Pâle were a descendant of spanish origin settled in Algeria from the XVII century, he would be likely descendant of some morisco family, no doubt.

You can't dictate your opinion on others. Turkey is Eurasian, some see it as a part of European, some not, depending on ideological views.

Turkey's European portion has larger population than several countries in Europe and is also bigger by area too.

That would be like calling Germany Muslim because there live millions of them

Geography doesn't really matter. Izmir is technically in Asia but it's definitely European in my opinion. No one says Turkey is %100 European but it's Eurasian like Russia and can be considered within the context of Europe. This is just my opinion and I will express it no matter how they lynch me in this forum full of extremist lunatics.

And do you have to jump into everything regarding Turkey's role in Europe? you won't really be changing anyone's view here. I suggest you mind your own business and try to put up with other opinions.

I don't really have a favourite to be honest.

However I guess I'd pick the Netherlands because it resonates with my culture the most. Otherwise Italy, France and Spain as honourable mentions. I would also say the UK, but I don't like certain aspects about their political correctness culture (which isn't a synonym to leftism, as France doesn't have that PC streak on them yet has a very leftist mainstream). In the UK the police would ignore crimes because the ethnicity of the criminal is too touchy, but they would show force for a Down syndrome patient for having said something racist. That's how PC they are and it sickens me. Otherwise you can't but admire their cultural legacy.

Otherwise Poland also interests me these days, but not enough to vote for them for I need to become more knowledgeable about that country and their nation still. ;)

I chose Hungary, country I already love very much and feel as second homeland.

First because of Stears <3 and his family (they are actually fantastic people and he is nothing like on TA in real life) and all the everyday Hungarians who have been incredibly polite and welcoming towards me, made me feel as home, were curious about my country Croatia and expressed positive feelings towards my homeland.
Links between Croatia and Hungary are very deep since Personal Union and our common history, deeper than any other we have with other neighbours (I exclude special ties to BiH which are well known to everyone), but little people in Croatia know about it. What suprised me greatly is how much Hungarians know about it and respect my country. It came to me as suprise despite all the history, we have been separated with Iron Curtain until recent and the language barrier is huge.

I love Budapest and gentle Hungarian coutryside as well as their beautiful language and am very impressed with the country. We live in Hungary and visit Croatia every holidays and I'm prefectly satisfied with that, Hungary is really a country fit to my liking :)

(In this image the east of europe appears less hot, but that is because in that zone the sun is hidden)

We had a day off today. But Lisbon reached it's all time maximum record in the last weeks: 42ºC
Someone has already edited wikipedia with the record:

Our highs should be at around 25ºC or 26ºC not fucking 40ºC.

I find it almost impossible to choose just one country as overall favourite, Im thinking in terms of places I enjoy to spend time/vacation.
For inland physical beauty I like Switzerland and it has some nice cities...Montreaux,Geneva.Zurich, also Western Austria has nice inland beauty too ...Salzburg and Innsbruck.
For coastal beauty I like Dalmatian coast, havn't been in Spain yet but I think they will have spectacular coastal places.
Budapest is a favourite city in the Central Euro/EastEuro region.

If you search spectacular coastal places with mountains in the back, cliffs etc, then you should travel to Northern Spain.
If you search spectacular coastal places with beaches, natural inlets etc, then you should travel to Eastern Spain, especially Balearic Islands.

I don`t hate Spain you idiot. And i don`t hate Portugal. Do you have ever heard cause and effect? It`s a shame that two retards like you and Vierato are allowed to post in this forum. You both are a shame for your countries. Many spanish member here have told me to ignore your posts. Do you understand?
Second, i have not been in Barcelona. I have a brother and he has travell a lot. He was impressed from Barcelona and he described as a modern city with a high standart of life. Just for curiosity, because i don`t intend to live in Barcelona, i have searched in internet and my impression is that Barcelona is a beautiful city.

Yes. Laberia, you and your brother are totally right. Wink*. Barcelona is a beautifull, modern and multicultural city, a cradle of artists, a city of business and congresses, and we, the catalans, are OPEN MINDED PEOPLE! :D
Thanks for your comments. (Independence for Catalonia!)

I have travelled all over Europe with other Aris fans and Madrid is one of the best cities I have been. I found Rosenborg the least city I like - it had excellent infrastructure and the like - but just the vibe was too lifeless and boring. In contrast Vienna was great.

I am more into cities than countries as I have seen them.

Poster catgeorge has the nerve to say "father of italo celtic germans",lmao.Where is the italo celtic in greece, busted nobodies?Nowhere to be found. To find the founding fathers you look at the much purer west, not the mongrelized east which has nothing of italo celtic like the map illustrates.

Yup. Flat countries are boring.

Of course Norway is not EU-country, but as I'm citizen of another Nordic country (even 2) I still can move, live, study, work there fully freely. Language sounds different (vs Swedish), but one should learn it pretty quickly. And if one is already citizen of Finland & Sweden ... probable even citizenship could not be a huge issue later on.

Southern west coast (surrounds of Bergen) is the most beautiful (my opinion). The mountains are sharper & higher vs Northern part of Norway. Everything looks very green too. Of course it rains a lot there (Atlantic Ocean).

Cold?
