Sandra Lee has breast cancer.
The Food Network star and partner to New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo will undergo a double mastectomy this week.
“Life can turn on a dime,” the 48-year-old star told People of her March diagnosis, which revealed cancer in her right breast.
Normal treatment is a lumpectomy and radiation but Lee has chosen a more drastic treatment for the ductal carcinoma in situ, or DCIS – a common noninvasive cancer contained in the milk ducts that can become invasive if not treated.
She reportedly does not want to undergo weeks of radiation. “I never want to go through this again,” she added.
Cuomo vows to be at her side during the operation and recovery. “This is about her feeling secure and loved,” he told the magazine.
Despite the uphill battle, Lee will use this opportunity to educate others.
“My doctor called me a poster girl for mammography,” she said. “I plan to spread the word about early detection.”
Lee, who shared the initial news on “Good Morning America” Tuesday morning, said she got the life-changing news while shooting People’s Most Beautiful issue.
“And I walked off the set, and 20 minutes later my doctor called and told me I had breast cancer,” she recalled. “I didn’t even cry, I was stunned …”
Lee says there are two ways in which cancer typically affects a person.
“It beats up your body, and it beats you up emotionally,” she detailed. “And it — I wasn’t going to let it rob me from one day of happiness.”
