To me he looks like a rough-featured Italic, yet there's also something eastern about him.

I tought robust Italic before you revealed his ethnicity. Imo he could even be a Southern Italian, they can sometimes resemble Balkanians. But he could pass as Slavic too, it just wouldn't be my first guess.
