In a first of its kind women-friendly initiative, a mobile phone safety app was launched in Odisha, India to help women in distress. The app, ‘Mo Saathi’ (which translates to ‘My friend’), is designed to be an extra security measure for employed women, who commonly travel alone at night. Commissioner of police, R.P. Sharma said that women are expected to register their names with the police and also provide contact numbers for parents or three friends. He added that thanks to GPS technology, the location of someone could easily be detected if there is an emergency. “In case of an emergency, the user can send an alert by pressing the power button. The alert would be transmitted to police control room and their parents or three friends,” explained Sharma. Last June, the police launched the ‘pink auto-rickshaw’ service so that women could travel without any fear of molestation in the city. And last September, the police had also started a women’s support center to provide counseling, legal and medical support to the women in distress.
