Can the environment in which your ancestors lived in affect where you gain weight?

I've wondered about this, since a few weeks ago I was asked to write out an assignment on how different biological functions are adapted to the environment, and that these adaptions are passed down to offspring. I am wondering if it is the same for humans also. This can apply to weight either composed of fat, or weight composed of muscle.
