As soon as Robin van Persie kicked the calf of an opponent in the very first minute of the World Cup final it was clear this would not be a 'beautiful game'.
Then when villain of the tournament Mark van Bommel went through the back of Spanish playmaker Andres Iniesta a yellow card was shown instead of the red that law allows.
So should we all blame English referee, Howard Webb, as some have tried to do?
