Myths and their origins

Prisoner of Ice once said there is a way to know if ancient stories have roots in reality. That is to see whether the characters all know each other, if they do then it is fully fiction. I was going to ask him to elaborate, until I remembered he is banned :(

Any one else familiar with this approach?

We can maybe say that legends are based on fact (e.g. king Arthur) and myths are not. But myths are still important and they reflect the truth.

I think prisoner of Ice mentioned the Odyssey, Icelandic saga and parts of the bible

The IE-pantheon is probably based on reality but I do not if or how I can use this method to those stories of POI´s examples
