HE WROTE it when he was just 22. Now, a century later, a fantasy work by JRR Tolkien is finally to be published, telling the story of a doomed young man who is sold into slavery and swears revenge on the magician who had killed his father.

The Story of Kullervo was written when Tolkien was at Oxford in 1914, though it was never completed. It was his first piece of prose fiction.

Tolkien alighted on the subject matter when he was studying Finnish grammar — he was a philologist — and was intrigued by the character Kullervo, a vengeful and misguided youth, from The Kalevala, a 19th-century Finnish epic.

Ever since I read the Kalevala many years ago, I have always felt sorry for Kullervo. He was not inherently evil; he was deeply hurt and became obsessed with revenge. It seemed that nothing he did ever turned out right.

I shall be very interested to see what Tolkien did with his story.
