So, genetics has destroyed the Jews' claim that they descend from a common male ancestor who lived in the 2nd millenium BC. As little as 20% of Jews can claim purely Semitic patrilineal descent, not to mention descent from a putative Jacob-Israel.

Actually, in this case it's confirmed that the majority Cohens of (Priests) descend from one common male ancestor (presumably Aaron, Moses's brother) something which is pretty amazing.
What you're talking about is the 12 tribes of Israel. Since that period there's been many absorptions of converts and whole tribes like the Idumeans (even in Biblical times) besides during the diaspora period.
