This map was created based on the latest Y-DNA data (http://www.eupedia.com/europe/european_y-dna_haplogroups.shtml) combined with physical and historical evidence. Names on the map are not necessarily ethnic groups but culturo-linguistic or historical ones. Colours are more indicative of the ethnic similarities and differences between regions.

I posted this on Skadi but everyone seems interested in other things.
-----------------
The Cosmographia by Sebastian Münster (1488 – 1552) from 1544 is the earliest German description of the world.

It had numerous editions in different languages including Latin, French (translated by François de Belleforest), Italian, English, and even Czech. The last German edition was published in 1628, long after his death. The Cosmographia was one of the most successful and popular books of the 16th century. It passed through 24 editions in 100 years. This success was due to the fascinating woodcuts (some by Hans Holbein the Younger, Urs Graf, Hans Rudolph Manuel Deutsch, and David Kandel). It was most important in reviving geography in 16th century Europe.

His first geographic works were Germania descriptio (1530) und Mappa Europae (1536). In 1540 he published a Latin edition of Ptolemy's Geographia with illustrations. The 1550 edition contains cities, portraits, and costumes. These editions, printed in Germany, are the most valued of the Cosmographias.

A map I've just seen on the knowledge level of English by the teens of some European countries. Actually, it's about the % of 14/15 year-old teenagers who can maintain a conversation in the language. Although the map seems to be 'own work' here, the data are based on a recent Eurobarometer (EU surveys).

(I'm surprised to see France % lower than the Iberian. I wonder if the teens just lied.) :p

Thats not so strange, since France protects very much the french language, and at the same time they usually have a big lobby to boycott the english as international language...

Yeah, I'm aware of that, I didn't expect it to be a high percentage in France either. But from personal impression, I'd have said France would be slightly over Iberia, maybe at 34% or so. Never at 14%!

I expected Portugal to be a little bit higher too.

nice too, but I desagree in some aspects...

next state in europe -> next 'concierto económico' in spain and next moor-panchito-paki-chinese territory.

once were our mates -> once were... something of their own.

northern potugal -> Galicia, no more no less.

the other opressed nation has no such area, no way and no matter how hard some nationalists try. (el mismísimo perikolez dice lo mismo :D )

And I like more the 'ribera de duero' wine than rioja wine.

The rest... OK.

The Blue-White-Red combination always looks very nice, eventhough that particular logo reminds me of Os Belenenses (https://fbcdn-sphotos-h-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/44708_556156431062260_461472932_n.jpg).

The real symbol of "fascist" (Salazar) Portugal - or the party - was this (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/f6/Uni%C3%A3o_Nacional.png). I don't like the regime, but at least they had a much better sense of historical symbolism that today's politicians.

Damião de Góis
06-12-2014, 10:38 PM
Indeed, Portugal's fascist symbol is just plain wrong. The red cross showed in the map is actually the symbol of a religious order from the XV century and it's associated with the discoveries rather than with fascism.

Here's the fascist Estado Novo's symbol like Vasconcelos mentioned:

Lol. Andorra has its own President. A butler?

But yeah, those coprinces could be useful. France might come in handy in case of land invasion. And the Bishop of Urgell, well, in case of spiritual invasion by ghosts from the beyond. :fpope:

49% territory of Bosnia is not offended by that, on contrary.

In fact, in Bosnian Serb Republic there are Serb flags in every corner, 5x more than in Serbia.

Flag of Republika Srpska is same as Serbian, only without coat of arms. In RS is more popular Serbian flag than flag of RS.

There are flags in every 400-500 meters of highway, and especialy on traffic roundabouts. :)

I would like that tradition to apply in Serbia too.
