The True Finns Party (http://www.perussuomalaiset.fi/) would win 10.1 percent of the votes if an election were held today, according to a poll commissioned by YLE in July. This is the first time over ten percent of respondents said they would back the right-wing party.

The True Finns overtook the Green League (http://www.vihreat.fi/en/node/4) as the fourth most popular party.

According to the poll carried out by pollster Taloustutkimus, the conservative National Coalition Party (NCP) continues to lead in popular support. A total of 23 percent of respondents said they would vote for the NCP. Support rose by 1.1 percentage points from June.

Trailing the NCP are the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and Centre Party with 20.5 percent and 19.7 percent support respectively. Since June, support for the SDP has declined by 0.6 percentage points. However, the Centre Party has gained ground with a rise of 0.5 percentage points.

Surge in Conservative Values

The Euro-sceptic True Finns saw an upswing in support in May after government approved a bailout plan for Greece, which was deeply unpopular in its ranks. Juho Rahkonen of Taloustutkimus says that growing feelings of resentment toward the EU and stronger conservative principles are behind the shift.

Meanwhile, fewer people backed the Greens. Support for the Green League stood at 9.5 percent, a drop of 1.1 percentage points from June. Rahkonen says the NCP and Greens compete for the same voters.

A total of 7.8 percent of respondents said they backed the Left Alliance, a fall of 0.3 percentage points since June. Support rose by 0.1 percentage points for both Christian Democrats and the Swedish People’s Party to 4.3 percent and 4 percent respectively.

Taloustutkimus interviewed 1,931 people in the poll. The margin of error was 2.5 percentage points.

Another poll, published on Saturday by the daily Helsingin Sanomat, showed the True Finns remaining in fifth place with 9.1 percent support, the same as in June. However the paper says its Gallup poll is not directly comparable with YLE's.

Most likely Soini's critisism of the lending of money to Greece became a big boost for the party.
