Grainne Close and Shannon Sickles were the first couple in the UK to celebrate a civil partnership in 2005

Two gay couples have taken the first step in a legal challenge to the ban on same-sex marriage in Northern Ireland.

The High Court granted permission for Grainne Close, her partner Shannon Sickles, and Chris and Henry Flanagan-Kane to seek a judicial review.

Ten years ago in Belfast, they became the first same-sex couples in the UK to enter into civil partnerships.

However Northern Ireland is now the only place in the UK and Ireland that has not legalised same-sex marriage.

The Northern Ireland Assembly has debated the issue four times and rejected it each time.

Christopher and Henry Flanaghan Kane are also seeking to challenge Northern Ireland's gay marriage ban

At the High Court in Belfast on Friday, a barrister for Stormont's Department of Finance and Personnel (DFP) argued that a similar case is currently going through the Family Division.

It involves a gay couple who want their marriage in England to be legally recognised in Northern Ireland.

But a lawyer representing Ms Close and the others involved in the judicial review case, said she was seeking to have the legislation completely struck down.

The challenge is based on claims that the ban discriminates against gay and lesbian couples.

The judge ruled that their case had enough merit to proceed to a full hearing, based on submissions already before him.

He said: "Rather than waste everybody's time by pretending otherwise, I propose to grant leave which means the applicant has an arguable case."

The case is due back again before the courts in September.

Maybe the law against murder could be challenged on the grounds that it discriminates against violent individuals.

Gay marriage and abortion (even in the cases of rape and spina bifida fetuses) are banned and illegal in Northern Ireland due to the strict ruling of the Protestant DUP party over NI. They're religious fanatics who are against people working on Sundays and are against the teaching of science and evolution in schools. They're a right wing and socially conservative party who've formed an alliance UK coalition government with the British Tories.

They're Eurosceptics though and support UK independence from the EU.

A high court judge ruled it is legal to not recognise gay and lesbian marriages in Northern Ireland: https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/northern-ireland-same-sex-marriage-not-recognise-legal-belfast-high-court-lgbt-rights-gay-lesbian-a7898531.html

This contrasts very differently to the Irish people in the mostly Catholic Republic of Ireland.

Attitudes in Ireland towards lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people are regarded as among the most liberal in the world.

They're the less Globohomo compliant Ireland, we can thank the plantations for that and they've practically been disowned by their Scottish Calvinist forebears on those grounds or "muh Ian Paisley" depending on who you ask. Catholics are barely putting up a fight against it in Ireland, I fear.

And I don't understand this at all. Less than 20 years ago, the Irish Catholics were freaking hardcore. I wonder what happened ?

As a rule, people tend to become more liberal/leftist with improvement of life standards + pro-liberalism education + consummer mass culture. Ireland still had a lot of people born in the eighties or even seventies and sixties 20 years ago. Most young Irish (18-30 years) nowadays were born in the 90s and 2000s.

Many will talk about kiddy fiddling priests but that's a right copout.

Truth is I'm fucked if I know, perhaps prosperity? Things are going alright in Ireland and they reckon this must be the way things must be done. This is how you first world, this is how you Euro. She was a borderline 3rd world country less than 30 years back as they'll tell you themselves but they seem blinded by the material. Much of their younger generation is now working overseas and deracinated at ages when they would've started families. They come home to vote for things like homo marriage and fuck off right back to Germany, England, Australia or wherever else they work. The result being: A homo taoiseach and this being a primary school in the emerald isle.

Then what they need (and we all need) is one hell of an economic crisis. I know it sounds terrible but it just might work,

Let me do the maths.

R.O.I. population (2016) 6,572,728 people

96.4% White (= 6,336,110 million white people living in Éire.)
1.7% Asian
1.1% Black
0.8% Other

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ireland

Northern Ireland population (2019 estimate) 1,885,400 people

98.28% White (= 1,852, 971 million white people living in N.I.)
1.06% Asian
0.20% Black
0.46% other

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northern_Ireland

Wales population (2017 estimate) 3,125,000 people

I can't see the ethnic groups listed for Wales: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wales#Demography

Scotland population (2017 estimate) 5,424,800 people

96.0% White (= 5,207,808 million white people living in Scotland.)
2.7% Asian
0.7% Black
0.4% Mixed
0.2% Arab
0.1% other

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scotland

England population (2017 estimate) 55,619,400

85.4% White (= 47,498,968 million white people living in England = more white people living in England than the entire amounts of white people living in Scotland, Wales, NI, and Ireland combined together. More white people living in England than in all the very small populations of the Scandinavian nations combined together. More white people in England than in Canada's entire population of 37.4 million people - not all of whom are white... and more white people in England than in Australia's 25.4 million total population - not all of whom are white in their population.)

7.8% Asian
3.5% Black
2.3% Mixed
0.4% Arab
0.6% Other

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/England

And 47,498,968 million white people living in England = millions more white people than many other European nations with very small total populations: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_European_countries_by_population

It isn't. Yet. They are breeding in alarming numbers so outside of Dublin, things will feel pretty Irish still.

I agree though. I knew Catholicism wasn't gonna keep Ireland from Globohomo 15 years ago when I saw how quickly Spain was nose diving into it, before anywhere in Scandinavia. I figured it was only a matter of time before it would hit Ireland.
