A match in the junior football tournament Gothia Cup ended in a riot on Thursday night.
After IFK Göteburg won 1-0 against Iraqi team Al Madina in the 16-year old boys' quarterfinal, hundreds of supporters of the Iraqi team stormed the pitch, and attempted to assault IFK's players.
Four Al Madina players were sent off with a red card during the match. As the match ended, a player of the Gothenburg team was claimed to have raised a middle finger to his lips, and kissed the team logo on his jersey, which enraged the Iraqi team's supporters.
A video of the events shows spectators chasing IFK's players, with at least one of them being pushed to the ground. According to the Aftonbladet tabloid, the referee was punched in the back. Players of Gothenburg's team fled to a nearby building or hid elsewhere.
"No-one was arrested, but a report has been made about the violent incident," said police spokesman Thomas Fuxborg.
Police dispersed the crowd and escorted both teams to their lodgings. Police will prepare for IFK Göteborg's next match in the tournament with additional reinforcements.
