I'm not sure how many of you non-guitar players like guitar solos, but I love them! If you're a fellow lover of fine picking, share with us some of your favorites.

My number one favorite would probably be "La Villa Strangiato" by Rush. Here's a live performance of it from 1978 and another from 1979:

Number two would go to "Time" by Pink Floyd:

And the number three spot would most likely go to "Achilles Last Stand" by Led Zeppelin

Kirk Hammett.
Metallica - Master of Puppets.(Solo-3:37)

ov9bMJETZTo

Nuno Bettencourt.
Extreme - Do you want to play?(Solo-2:28)

EVi6H-8N6NA

Although the solo is quite short, it does seem, to me, one continuous solo regardless.

Slash.
Guns 'N Roses - Sweet Child of Mine.(Solo-2:54)

Dimebag Darrell
Pantera - Medley of solos.(R.I.P. Dimebag (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=U38icvKBabg))

And finally...every guitar solo appreciation thread should have this...

That is just a few. They might not be my favourites as, quite frankly, all guitarists in the genre of ROCK 'N ROLL are well versed in plucking out a great solo. It must be a tradition, or an old charter, or something. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Rankin#Recurring_characters_and_running_gag s)

I could easily include anything by Santana, Clapton, Young, Van Halen, Hendrix, Brian May, and on...

Excellent topic!

A few solos I quite like:

Burzum - Key to the Gate
http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=gWynJCi_DSY
No frills, no wankery. One of my all-time favourite solos.

Candlemass - Bewitched

Lars is one of my favourite guitarists. Great solo and the video makes me chuckle.

Destruction - The Ritual

Heathen - Opiate of the Masses
http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=pCbClSsO62w
Not a big fan of Heathen's vocals but this solo is pretty awesome.

Whiplash - Power Thrashing Death
http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=nfp2cbkpQs8

Stratovarius - Holy Light
http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=KHVP2anxbH8
Not a power metal fun but Strato's Visions album is decent and I really love this song (perhaps partially because I have little tolerance for power metal vocals and this song has none).

And just to give a little opposition to this thread:

Turisas' infamous "Fuck the Guitar Solos" :D

Here is a real obscure band called "Captain Beyond" who made 1 great album and then 2 more not so much. This is a rare live video of them playing "Dancing Madly Backwards, On a Sea of Air"

The guitar solo gets going pretty good at the 2:30 area. The guitarist and the bass player were in the band Iron Butterfly, with the great rock classic hit "Inna Godda Da Vida".

Well unlike the OP I'm not a huge fan of fret-wankery (;)), but of course I'm always impressed to no end by Try Azagthoth's mad skillz (especially since on early MA recordings his guitar work is a bit ... iffy):
