Southern European arrivals surpass German migrants into Switzerland

These southern Europeans are more likely to move to Italian speaking Ticino and the French speaking lake Geneva regions. They are putting downward pressure on salaries in these places, in particular areas with high numbers of cross-border workers. From 2008 to 2014 the number of immigrants from southern Europe increased from 13,500 to 22,300 a year. Over the same period those from Germany dropped from 29,000 to 6,800 annual arrivals. Overall, new arrivals are more qualified than the resident population and Swiss unemployment has remained fairly stable rising at a rate of 0.7% per year over the same period. ~
