"I love Russia and Ukraine, which is part of Russia."

French actor Gérard Depardieu has been banned from Ukraine because he is considered “a threat to national security,” according to reports on Tuesday.

Depardieu’s name has reportedly been added to a list of around 600 individuals who have been blacklisted by the country’s culture .

Ukraine media are banned from talking about them or publishing their images.

The appearance of the controversial French actor on the black list was reported by Ouest France, who quoted Russian newspaper Vesti.

Depardieu is a big fan of Vladimir Putin, who in January 2013 handed the actor a Russian passport, which was warmly accepted. Depardieu is registered as living in the town of Saransk, with his address listed as No. 1, Democracy Street.

He has also frequently spoken out in support of the Russian president and has angered Ukrainian leaders with some of his comments at the height of the ongoing conflict in the east of the country.

According to reports Depardieu was cited for his speech at a film festival in Riga, Latvia in August 2014, when he said: “I love Russia and Ukraine, which is part of Russia.”

French actor will not be allowed to enter Ukraine for five years for appearing to support Vladimir Putin's annexation of Crimea

Gerard Depardieu has been banned from Ukraine for five years for making public comments suggesting he supported Russia’s annexation of Crimea.

The Ukrainian Security Service, the country’s main successor agency to the KGB, said the 66-year old French film star had been added to a blacklist of public figures considered hostile to Ukraine in its on-going confrontation with Russia.

“The SBU has decided to ban Mr Depardieu for 5 years on the recommendation of the ministry of culture,” agency spokesman Elena Gitlyanskaya said.

She did not cite any specific comments by Mr Depardieu, who starred in films including Cyrano de Bergerac and Green Card and is notorious for alcohol-fuelled off-screen antics including drink-driving and urinating in the aisle of an

aeroplane.

Earlier this month Ivan Kirilenko, Ukraine’s culture minister, said Mr Depardieu had been included on a list of 117 artists and entertainers who had publicly supported “the violation of Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.”

Mr Depardieu has previously spoken out publicly in support of Russia and said he considers Vladimir Putin a friend.
