In northern Illinois, the temperatures were warmer today than they've been in some time, reaching about 15 degrees F. It's been much colder lately, and the snowpack has been on the ground for well over twenty days without any significant thawing. Makes me dream of spring, it does . . .

It's currently about 25F with a thin dusting of snow outside. It's suppose to snow tonight & tommorow, maybe 2-3 inches. We've only had about 1.5 inches so far this winter. But the ice on my pond is about 4 -5 inches thick. I live south of the snowbelt but north of the sunbelt. Everything turns brown & dies in the winter time & there is no blanket of white snow to cover it up.:(

We've got a winter storm happening that began about 2 hours ago. It's coming all the way from Texas!! They're calling for 15-20 cms of snow today. So I really am in my snow globe today with the white stuff just a-spiralling every which way. Snow day! The county has declared a snow emergency. You don't have to stay off the roads but the recommend it. No lialbility if you ignore them. Anyway they probably won't get around to clearing my road for a couple of days, there are only 3 households up here. There's about 3-4 inches of snow on top of all the ice. I was waken several times last night by the sound of tree limbs breaking off from the weight of the ice & crashing to the ground.

Lost power for about 5-hours last night but it happen at bedtime so no biggy. Guess I will goof off (more then normal) for the next couple of days.:typing

Æmeric

Update: I couldn't go anywhere if I wanted to. The gravel lane I live on is blocked by several large tree limbs. And the state road it leads to is closed. They haven't even began to clear it, I suspect they are using their resources to clear I-64.

Hard to believe, but we've been "freezing" for some days now in Athens.

(In quotation marks because our freezing is not the same as your freezing :D)

Right now it's +6C but it feels colder because of the bloody humidity (I hate that ) and throughout the week it's been going like this....approximately a +4C - +7C average.

It has snowed on the mountains of Attica and in some suburbs but it never goes beyond light snow/rain in the centre.

I really hate this intermediate, muddy weather. I like it when't it's either hot and sunny (+20C) or very cold (below 0C) and snowy.

I am planning on hitting the bars tonight, but quite unexpectedly there seems to be a snowstorm rolling through here currently. We might get up to 8 inches of snow. It won't stop snowing until around 3 PM tomorrow. WTF, that came out of left field.

EDIT:
THE WINTER STORM WARNING IS IN EFFECT INTO MONDAY AFTERNOON.

SNOW WILL SPREAD THROUGHOUT THE REGION THIS EVENING AND BECOME HEAVY AT TIMES OVERNIGHT. WINDS WILL ALSO INCREASE LATE TONIGHT ALLOWING FOR BLOWING AND DRIFTING OF THE SNOW WITH VISIBILITIES FALLING BELOW 1/4 MILE AT TIMES.

BASED ON THE LATEST FORECAST TRACK OF THE STORM... IT APPEARS AS THOUGH 8 TO 12 INCHES OF SNOW WILL FALL.

Well, what I am most concerned about is that my friends will probably all cancel on me.

EDIT EDIT: Got the call, all systems go. Perfect drinkin' weather.

Be still my heart, it went up to 7C today!!!! Everyone laughs at me, but I still say that Manitoba has at least two more blizzards to go before May arrives. What a winter it was, so many bitter, bitter days. This is a province of extremes. The winter will bring temps in the -40s with windchills down into the -50s and -60s in some instances, and then in the summer it will be 40C!!! Why does everyone stay in Winnipeg? Russia has the worst climate in the world (when it comes to freezing temperatures). Well, Mongolia is even worse but it isn't much of a country.

Even Iceland has a milder climate.

Today, however, it's very sunny and chilly (-5 C). Yesterday's perfectly white snow reflects light and one has to wear sun glasses, as eyes are still adjusted to semi-polar night darkness. :D

Here in Missouri, which is in the middle part of the U. S., we are having unusual but nice weather. We never hardly had any winter, and now it is acting like spring. Officially we can still have freezing weather until May 15th. Last fall I ordered a bush from an online nursery, and they replied they would send it in the spring at an appropriate time. Guess what I got it today, two months before it quits freezing here. For the time being it is sitting on my bathroom window sill. But the weather itself is marvelous, some days it has been in the 60's & 70's. The birds have returned and flowers are sprouting.

Æmeric

Oddly enough there is a monsoon season in the US Southwest in July & august. Usually most storms consist of wind (with dust of course) thunder & lightening & the smell of wet dirt in the air with little actually rain. They usually form in the evening hours. But I have experienced some torrential downfalls with several inches of rain that have result in flash floods, streets turning into rivers & retention basins becoming lakes in less then an hour. These stroms can be very localized however, with one area receiving several inches of rain & another area a few miles away receiving nothing.

Ah, getting snow today? We had some wet flakes mixed in with the heavy rain yesterday but no accumulation. We're on the "warm" side of the storm right now (35F/1.6C) so it's been mostly rain....whereas you & Barreldriver are on the colder side of the system, hence the snow. It's all about what the temperature of the air is 5000' above the earth's surface.

I expect colder air to move in aloft over us latter today and we should see some wet, slushy snow accumulate overnight--particularly over the higher terrain. My house is at 1200' above sealevel so we often see snow where the lower valleys stay rain.

Regardless, the weather has been pretty foul around here for the last week or so with only brief glimpses of blue sky & sunshine (Sunday afternoon was nice).

So I resigned myself to buying yet another umbrella from a shop at the university. Walking home the same thing thankfully didn't happen. :thumbs up

Other than that it's been freezing bloody cold and raining pretty much constantly all day. :( Add to that the cracked window that also doesn't line up properly (I've been nagging the landlord about this for aaages) and my room is pretty bloody cold.

Still living in a snowglobe...pretty fluffy flakes casually flying about...and there's a wee carpet of snow on the ground now...just enough to whitewash the brownish-green grass.

But they tell us it's supposed to hit above 10 C come Monday!!!

Nah, we don't get snow here (well, very little anyway), so it doesn't count! :D

Well, we barely missed the tornadoes. :( They were all around and got very very close. We have trees and power polls down. Homes destroyed, trailers turned upside down...etc, It got very scary for a few minutes here with the city alarms sounding and the hail bouncing off the ground and cars. The hail that fell here is bigger than golf balls ...we got a few of them in the freezer :D

There were 2 people that I know of killed in the Murfreesboro, Tn tornadoes, apparently a mother and her infant child. :(

I will post some pictures later.

Weather report from mid America.
We are having great weather, all the birds have returned, we discovered the finches have already built a nest in the wreath on my front door, and the cats insist that some birds are setting up house keeping in a bush in front of my bedroom window. They spend a lot of time watching it. The flowers are starting to come up, which is great. But you can't trust the weather, it can frost up until May 15th. One spring it turned very warm and everything budded out, including my roses. Then the frost came and killed everything above ground, including the roses. But right at the present it is very nice, some days up to 60 degrees.

Today is about -3 C, rather grey out and it was snowing earlier though its stopped now.

Its a little disappointing since a few days ago all signs pointed toward perfect spring weather. Just warm enough, the sun was shining, the smell of spring was in the air and all I wanted to do was go frolic outside:p Ah well, that's Canada for you. Never terribly decisive in its seasonal decisions:rolleyes:

Well I'm happier than a pig in sh...aving cream to report that it is a truly glorious day here in the nation's capital! High of 15C so far, nary a cloud in the sky, and Sunna's brightness and warmth are most welcome and refreshing! I've had all the doors and windows wide open...I can even hear my wind chimes out back playing me a soft melody. :) Tis truly Spring! And I am a very happy camper! :D

Seems like Aemma finally kept her snow to her self lol! :D It's sunny spring weather, just got done replanting a tree, it was originally by our ramp to the back deck of the house, got too big so we transplanted it to the front. Nice perfect weather for the job. Cool, breezy, sunny weather. Though I do miss the rain we had a day ago. A solid week of rain :D until now.

I was in Somerset and Meyersdale in South, central Pennsylvania, and it snowed off and on all day long. It was beautiful. As soon as a snow storm would blow over, the sun would be shining. Then snow again. Now its predicted to be 80 degrees this Saturday. You gotta love spring.
