I agree. South Italy and Greece would be very far fetched. Spain is the first choice. However in the younger photos without the beard you can clearly see the Latin American vibe of the Criollos or Mestizos de Casta, which look predominantly Spanish but you can tell that there's some Atahualpa on him too :P

With the beard however is very hard to tell, he looks indistinguishable from any other Spaniard.
