Oh goodness how depressing! :( We're being hit too, in Southern Ontario especially, which used to drive the whole of the Canadian economy once upon a time.

Ugh, tough times ahead I'm afraid.

"Bon courage les amis", as we say in French.

Cheers!...Aemma

A sad reflection of the "value" put on human resources... when a company is in difficulty, the first thing they do is to cut staff :(. So rest assured that it will always be the "common" employees to pay for the management's (aka "fat cats") mistakes.

It is absolutely crazy! I am unemployed at present, have been since the beginning of December,(I was let go of through having been ill and the site coming to a literal standstill. The crane was coming down and the site finishing up), but the jobs are just not available to the native working class man.

Jobs are so far and few between, mixed with construction employers looking only for casual temporary labourers and above, the market only offers positions at present for maybe up to a week at a time.

With jobs being unattractive and temporary, the onus is lost to those on the dole to leave the comfort and semi-certainty that that provides to only have the job whisked away and to start the process all over again and reapplying for further cut down benefits.

Ugh well that makes it doubly hard if each time you try to get off the dole and have to reapply because of horrible economic circumstances you're penalised for reapplying. We have a bit of a similar system here too. It doesn't make any sense.

Well apparently there are plenty of jobs to be had in Western Canada BWW, if this ever interests you. You'd have to learn to be comfortable freezing your bits off in the wintertime and roasting them in the summer...but we have all adjusted over time. My own family has been here for over 300 years so there's proof in the pudding as we say. Oh and yes, one does grow downey fur on one's body being here too...so you being part WulfWer would fit right in! :D

Cheers!...Aemma

Here's another victim. My job contract runs out at end of Jan. Which means more time for Apricity! :D :thumb001:

Job cuts are hitting here too. The resources boom is officially over, related industries here are feeling it.

We've also got a heap of expats coming back from the UK, Europe and Asia. So being unemployed now would be one of the worst times, so much competition for jobs. Employers also use times like this to supersede older employees with ones who are better qualified.

the amount of young Males un-employed in Britain is un-real, I've had to completely leave my trade in Construction as the entire industry is dieing a fast and painful death.

Since November I have had 3 different jobs! The first 2 where factory jobs working with an agency being put into two different factories where English was not the first language and you are out numbered atleast 4 to 1 by foreigners, I haven't got a problem with Eastern Europeans but that was absolutely ridiculous, Immigrants should never make up the majority ANYWHERE nevermind running the entire place.

Not to mention without fail atleast one day a week we would show up and be told we was not needed and would be sent back off home with no pay what so ever.

I've now got a job as a trainee Chef in a restraunt but this is no chain restraunt it's a family ran place so it's only a matter of time before this place is hit by the great depression also.

I wish I could have the attitude of more time for The Apricity if I became un-employed but being given £45 a week hardly feeds me let alone pays for luxuries such as the internet.

That's what's always got me angry. If a man turns up to work to do his best and earn the days wage, then he should be compensated for at least being there, regardless of if he is or isn't needed.

But where's the laws to protect us?

temporary Agency workers are expolited more than any other worker. They expect you to work to the same standard as the permenent staff on a lower wage and with little benefits, the problem is it's impossible for us all to do somthing about it becuase the immigrants come in and nod there head to anything, as I've said I dont mind Eastern Europeans as people but the ones I came across in the work place have no pride and morals and will happerly work like a slave on slaves pay and because of this we either have two choices as to become slaves ourselfs or become un-employed.

They had the audacity to ask me if I wanted to work overtime at the weekend once, I asked how much the rate is..It was still minimum wage while the permenent staff got double time which for them was about £15.00 an hour, they where honestly expecting me to work on a factory line next to sombody doing the exact same job for 10 pound an hour less? I almost put them threw the window there and then.

It is slowly (and I do mean slowly) getting better for agency workers, they are now entitled to holidays, in January 2010 Agency workers who have been somwhere for 12 weeks have to be paid at the same rate as the permenent staff but I can see the loophole in that one everybody getting laid off for a week after 12 weeks then told to come back, yet the Brains of Britain in Parliment passing the bill couldn't see that one, idiots.

When I worked agency I was normally on more than the permanent workers, especially at weekends that were time and a half and double time. It was always funny to be washing the dishes on more than the chef!

they are now entitled to holidays

I'm in two minds over that, though.

When I was looking after a few labourers on site, they were earning no more than £150 after tax and agency fees each week.
That wasn't great, but it gave you some money. They would grumble.

Then, in Gordon Browns infinite wisdom, he decided to levy a compulsory holiday charge on top of that.

So now lads who were living on £150 after tax, were now going home with little more than £120 in their pockets thanks to the law.

They didn't want to have holidays, and if they did they would pay for it on their own terms and their own means.

And people wonder why some decide to live on the dole.
£96 a week plus your rent, tax and insurance paid, or working and having £120 a week and paying rent, tax, and bills?

Tough one. :)

Sorry. I'm going by me. I have a partner and two kids, you see.

But with that said, the avenue is ripe to extract more money if I was so inclined to do so.
I could claim sick benefit on top of that and play up my asthma, I could easily get carers allowance as my child suffers from an affliction which could be signed away(I know a doctor;)) as being necessary for full time care.

It is endless.

This is another reason why people stay on the dole.

EDIT: Drug users! They get an extra allowance for being smack heads! Amazing, ain't it!?

I dont see why you dont claim the extra money. Next time I'm out of work I wont think twice about it I'm sick of being loyal to a system which is designed to fuck me over, it's time to start playing them at there own games.

My partner works at a night hostel for the homeless - 90% of them have either a drug or alcohol problem. The drug users get £200 per week in benefits and get everything else paid for, the ones with alcohol problems get even more than that. Completely hates the place, mainly because of these lazy bastards who have no intention of trying to give up their substance abuse - but then again, there's no incentive for them to give up.
