Feng shui is an ancient Chinese system of aesthetics believed to use the laws of both Heaven (astronomy) and Earth (geography) to help one improve life by receiving positive qi.

The original designation for the discipline is Kan Yu (... literally: Tao of heaven and earth).

The term feng shui literally translates as "wind-water" in English. This is a cultural shorthand taken from the following passage of the Zangshu (Book of Burial) by Guo Pu of the Jin Dynasty:

Qi rides the wind and scatters, but is retained when encountering water

I really do not know to much about Feng Shui but what I do know is that the people who I have met that have placed importance on this system tend to hug trees and eat lots of hummus. :)

I am fairly confident though that the system does have merit considering that the Chinese have honored its use for thousands of years, regardless of the new age hype associated with it today in Western society.:thumb001:

It's hooey.

But people who abide by it are good interior decorators.

Extremely overrated and has become an industry unto its own, just like everything else I suppose. Vive le capitalisme!

On a related subject, I am sick and tired of all the Buddhas and bamboo and rubberwood and the Asian look in décor. Ok, you know, it looks really out of place when it's 40 freaking below outside and there's 5 flipping feet of snow outside your front door! Deliver me from this Zen nonsense!

I certainly don't disagree, but the original idea(s) are one thing, and the way they're being commodified in the West to make a quick profit is another. ;)

Or maybe Punk Shui is more your cup of tea?

:) Of course you're right. :)

LOL Punk Shui? LOL Too funny!

Nahhh, I just like more traditional stuff, something with a Nantucket, or French or English Country vibe to it. :) I can't stand any Shui! :P

Personally, I think Feng Shui is a load of rubbish. I was given a small book on Feng Shui tips when I was younger. Some things were obvious (it's not good to have your ground floor below street level), and some things were a bit ridiculous (chimes in NW side of bedroom, no mirrors in bedroom etc).

An old aunt of mine (that I am not close to) is into it (she is retired and obviously very bored)...she asked me to send her the layout of my room so she could tell me how to place the furniture and do the same when I move...can we say not gonna happen? I've slept with my feet pointing at the door for years and not only am I not dead, I am in fairly good health!
