Estonian Football Defeats Faroe Islands (http://news.err.ee/videos/b006b145-a006-4055-9cc6-397beb40308a)

Estonia: 2, Faroe Islands: 1
The national team somehow came back from football hell scoring two goals during stoppage time in the opening qualifier of the 2012 UEFA European Football Championship.

Faroe Islands player Jóan Símun Edmundsson, a 19-year-old from Newcastle United, scored a penalty shot in the 24th minute, leaving Estonia in a desperate struggle for the remainder of the standard 90 minutes.

On its home turf, Estonia was on the offensive for the majority of the game – with 14 goal attempts compared to three by Faroe Islands – but could not break through a well-organized defense. Kick after kick failed, including one that bounced of the goal post, dumbfounding 5,470 onlookers, of whom many were very depressed-looking Estonian fans.

Finally, in the first minute of stoppage time, Kaimar Saag, who replaced star player Andres Oper, tied the game. In the game’s final minute, team captain Raio Piiroja came to aid the offensive players and helped land Estonia’s winning goal. Initially, the second goal was thought to have been scored by Saag, who later said he barely tapped the ball.

Estonia’s next qualifying game is with Italy on September 3.

Indeed, the goal which tied the game was scored on the 91th minute and the winning goal for Estonia was scored on the last (94th) minute. This doesn't happen every day.

Skiing, most of our Olympic gold medals come from that area.

Estonia actually has about half a chance of making it to the tournament. (http://en.uefa.com/uefaeuro2012/standings/index.html)

For a football team like the Estonian national team, every qualifying victory is an accomplishment.

Congrats! I'm really waiting for Finland to start the qualifiers, too. I'm actually going to Holland to see the game against them (second qualifying game) in September. That will be great. :naughty2:

Well, the Faroes lost to Canada in the World Cup qualifiers. That tells you something.

I have no idea of the quality of the Canadian team. But ultimately, who cares? You cheer for your own team and rejoice in their victories and mourn their losses. C'est la vie. ;)

The Canadian team sucks.

I'm a Canadian of partial Faroese descent. I'm doing more mourning than rejoicing.

Actually it is, as Estonia and the Faroe Islands are almost equal(Estonia is ranked slightly higher) in UEFA Europe rankings.

Seriously though, the Faeroes are seen as the whipping boys of European football. If Estonia can beat Italy, that would be REAL news.

Are any of the Estonian team professional footballers? I know that the Faeroese team are amateur footballers, so during the day they usually work as fishermen or farmers etc.

Yeah but Faroese footballers drive nicer cars.

Yes, Estonian footballers are professionals. There are many who are in high quality clubs(like Arsenal) over Europe.

I blame Russians ;) for our bad quality football team. There are quite a few in the team.

Haha, and I blame the English Football League for Wales' poor performances year-in-year-out. Most of our players play there. They're great when they're playing for their clubs, but tend to perform like slugs on crutches internationally :(

Do you know Valery Karpin? He played for Russia but he was born in Estonia so I dont know if he´s an ethnic estonian or ruski. He played many years in Spain, including the club that i support . He was quite good but with a terrible agressive character
