The Web Is Dead. Long Live the Internet (http://www.wired.com/magazine/2010/08/ff_webrip/all/1)

Two decades after its birth, the World Wide Web is in decline, as simpler, sleeker services — think apps — are less about the searching and more about the getting. Chris Anderson explains how this new paradigm reflects the inevitable course of capitalism. And Michael Wolff explains why the new breed of media titan is forsaking the Web for more promising (and profitable) pastures.

Blame us and blame them. (http://www.wired.com/magazine/2010/08/ff_webrip/all/1)

Based on this graphic, email seems to have never held a huge share of the total traffic. Still, it's surprising to me to see it being squeezed right out.

I use email all the time. Am I archaic now?

I don't think email is out of the door anytime soon ... companies will continue to use it for decades to come probably. There is no replacement alternative to email yet.

It's the main form of communication here at work. We use an old system called BlitzMail (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BlitzMail).

It literally hasn't changed appreciably since the late 1980s. People here love it, and so do I. Alas though, our new college president doesn't and we now have plans in the works to all be phased over to some Microsoft system within the next couple of years. Yuck!

Save Blitz!

I suppose the answer depends on the reasons you use it? What might they be?

I think that's exactly right. eMail is an acceptable medium for official correspondence and business will hold onto it for a long time to come.

The graph shows that email and web content have declined as a percentage of internet traffic since 2000. But how much has internet traffic increased ober the last 10 years? I think email and the web are holding their own. As for email never being a large part of internet traffic, most email contains very small amounts of bytes compared to other internet traffic. If you live in an area with poor internet service you know the headaches of trying to view video versus opening an email with no files attached.

Yeah the company I work for still uses LOTUS NOTES.

Ugh!

I usually date myself when I say I know what IRC is. Man, IRC was so much fun! There are even songs about it:

Pfft! My last office used Solaris (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solaris_%28operating_system%29) systems...which came out in '92. My current office uses a Windows OS...but runs crappy/ancient/text-bases UNIX programs. :(

Uhh... I use Solaris too. And program in PERL.

Solaris rocks, though.

Unix > Windows.

Oh yeah, and CORBA... don't get me started.

I should add, I love Unix scripting. lol. There are some people on this forum and others who are so easy to debate with I bet I could make them into a shell script.

Unix > Windows.

Debatable now that Apple (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OSX) has joined the game.

Mac OS is Unix-based.

It's percentages. People don't send 6 gig emails, but steal a lot of software/games/films/music on P2P. Doesn't necessarily mean email is used less.

My point exactly.

Guilt by association.
