And still the boats keep coming: Authorities on Greek Lesbos struggling to cope with the 4,000 migrants arriving EVERY DAY

Nearly half the migrants reaching Greece in small boats from Turkey arrive on the island of Lesbos

Authorities are struggling to cope with the 4,000 people who arrive each days after making the crossing

A football stadium has been turned into a screening centre and more police and finger print equipment drafted in

Around 17,000 have now been screened and boarded ferries to the mainland, but aid workers fear more are coming

It may have been compared to a warzone by its residents, but that has not slowed the boat loads of migrants arriving on the Greek island of Lesbos.

Authorities are struggling to cope with the 4,000 refugees arriving each day after making the perilous crossing to the holiday island.

Nearly half the migrants reaching Greece in small boats from Turkey arrive on Lesbos, and sleep rough there until they can be registered.

Eventually other EU countries will close their borders and we ll be left with millions of hardcore Muslim Pakistanis and other immigrants and we'd totally deserve it. We should start sinking a few boats to deter more from coming and we should totally ignore the UN and all their idiotic talk about protecting refugees.

The Greek coastguard has seized a ship loaded with thousands of undeclared, carefully concealed weapons, and possibly explosives, en route from Turkey to Libya. Local media claims the ship is linked to Islamic State (IS) and to

companies who have previously smuggled goods to Syria – the Turkish foreign minister denies this.

The ship had come from Alexandretta in Egypt on to the Turkish port of Iskenderun, and was bound for the Libyan port of Misrata – a stronghold of the Muslim Brotherhood-linked group “Libya Dawn.”

It was raided on Tuesday 20 nautical miles off Create and has now been escorted to the port of Heraklion where searches began on Wednesday. The ship flies under a Bolivian flag, but its seven-member crew are thought to be from Syria, Egypt and India.

Greek language website kathimerini.gr claims the firm who are registered as owning the ship were identified by American arms trafficking researchers Odessa Network as making nine shipments to Syria in 2012, possibly from Russian and Ukraine.

I don't see women and kids I see mostly, single Pakistani and Afgani men. We should sink their boats and let them swim a bit...back to Turkey ;)

You know in USA and Australia you can be shot on spot if you violate their borders.

If they don't want to be killed they should stay in Turkey or Syria and fight for their country.

Sure do, the toddlers too, just hand them a wee AK, it comes natural to them, doesn't it?

and let's start killing those european immigrants too? they should stay in their country and fight a much easier fight, there is no war in Greece, only a corrupted government , rite?

A friend of mine went to Germany to seek job, he couldn't find any, so he returned back. I don't think EU citizens have access to any benefits in another EU country, except in Britain perhaps.

In any case I would suppport a move by Germany or Britain to close their borders to other EU citizens coming from poorer countries. They have to look after the rights of their citizens first. If they get too many immigrants from a certain country they should have the right to close their borders.

caling for closing borders is one thing thatcan be discussed (I would argue against, but I aknowledge there are good reasons to consider it) But alling for the murder of families with children as a deterrent... wtf are u on? Isn't uruguay made of immigrants? Maybe argentines should jave started sinking boats full pf Galicians and Italians as a deterrent ? looking after their own citizens first....:picard1:

We are full of Syrian immigrants. The toddlers are the responsibility of their parents. Is it our responsibility to care for every Syrian, Somali or Afgani toddler? What about the Greek toddlers that are being rapidly replaced byNon-Greek toddlers. 1 in 5 births in Greece are now from immigrants.

From now on we should be sinking all boats that approach our shores. Let the traffickers save them and collect them back to the Turkish shores. Turkey is not a war zone country. If they put their toddlers on danger the crime is on them, we should not save any of them, not even their toddlers.

Syrians are only the majority of a minority.

It's always all good when it doesn't affect you but people change their opinions quickly when it starts to concern them very directly. For every agreement or supposed humanism on immigration some had in the last 30 years, someone else in your country had his life changed permanently, it is something to always keep in mind, because one day inevitably, someone will have agreeded on it for you, and it will be your turn. The foundations of a nation, is also caring about the life of other people like it is your own wether you may still be privileged enough to not endure the consequences. It has been a slower but comparable process for decades, while some managed to trick themselves into thinking people can integrate and everything will be fine, that only changing the position of populations on a map will change them... it's much easier to believe that when you are away from it until the reality of a daily life is not right next to your door. If you don't consider your fellow country men and women better and with more empathy than others then there is no nation anymore, it's not nationalism it's just the most current effective system the world has. If you want to turn the whole world in a vacant lot without borders, it's very different revolution you want to make than agreeing on the flooding of sovereign countries. Like no lesson was ever learned again from history, surely not the right ones at least.

Pragmatically and besides any political considerations, even the relatively low flow of immigration we had for at least 30 years now is unimaginable at the scale of extra European history inputs, it happened in the blink of an eye and cannot be described as anything else than an civilized plan of invasion and replacement.

The only reason I like USA is because of my Black friends and my Russian brothers.

It's funny, but it's their demonym nonetheless (I know you know that :p). I first saw it used like that in the game Rome: Total War, were you have Lesbian Rebels when the island of Lesbos revolts against your empire. ;)

Lesbos is also an island with a rather conservative Orthodox Christian population, which is even more ironic. Only because Sappho of Eresos used to hail from there...

Sun, sea and Sappho
Should only those born on the Greek island of Lesbos be allowed to call themselves lesbian? Yes, say some islanders embarrassed by the word's more common usage. Don't be ridiculous, say the lesbian tourists - and the locals who welcome them. Julie Bindel flew out to join the fray

Arriving at the tiny airport of Mytilene on the Greek island of Lesbos, I walk past a sign advertising "Lesbian wine". I'm on my way to Eressos, a small Greek village where, I am told, lesbian tourists are 10 a penny. This island in the Aegean Sea is to some lesbians what Torremolinos is to 18-30 holidaymakers - the destination of choice for those who want to sunbathe and party with kindred spirits, and be open about their sexuality..

Lesbians began to visit the island in the 70s, and have been coming back ever since. But now trouble is brewing. Three Lesbians (natives of the island of Lesbos) have submitted a legal challenge in an attempt to stop the Homosexual and Lesbian Community of Greece (OLKE) from using the term "lesbian". The use of the word to denote a sexual preference derives from the island's association with Sappho, the ancient poet who wrote about her love for women. But according to Dimitris Lambou, editor of the rightwing publication Davlos (Torch), and two female colleagues, using lesbian in this way "disgraces them around the world"; islanders, they say, are suffering "psychological and moral rape", due to being confused with lezzers such as myself.

Eight years ago, the Candy Bar, a lesbian bar in London, organised a group trip to the island. Flyers advertising a "Wet Pussy Party" flooded Eressos, prompting the then mayor of the village to try to stop around 100 British lesbians from disembarking from their cruise ship for a stop off. Behaviour was lewd and loud, and to make matters worse for the islanders, the group was accompanied by a film crew from Channel Five, making a fly-on-the-wall documentary, Lesbians Go Mad on Lesbos.

"We are still recovering from that," says Anastasia, who works at the Parasol bar which is perched on the seafront. "Some of the women were like men. They were shouting things to women that few men would dare, such as 'Lovely tits'."

Many returning tourists choose to settle in Lesbos and take jobs, or run their own businesses. From 60% to 70% of lesbians living on the island are English and German, but a sizable minority are from mainland Greece.

Selina Firth lived in Eressos between 1990 and 1995, and returns regularly for holidays. She, along with increasing numbers of lesbians from the UK, began to visit Lesbos in the early 1980s when cheap charter flights made it easier to get to. She later decided to sell off her possessions, and move to Eressos. "At that time, there was only me and two other lesbians living here," she says, "and the holidaymakers would live in benders on the beach in the summer, which pissed the locals off no end."

The women who came to Eressos in those days were mainly lesbian feminist separatists, Firth says. They were angry and confrontational with men, and would clash with them regularly. The men, in the main, she says, were hardcore misogynists, who hated not having sexual access to the women, and would become deeply offended at any sign of affection between them. There were a number of attacks on lesbians, including sexual assault, and confrontations between male islanders and lesbian tourists were commonplace. "This square," says Firth, referring to the area with the two lesbian-run bars, close to the Sappho statue, "used to be inhabited almost entirely by local families on Saturday nights. There would be an uproar when women, after a few drinks, would lose their inhibitions and start snogging and sitting on each other's knees."

Eventually, the villagers grew used to the lesbians, and in turn, the women less confrontational. "Some of the villagers knew I was a creative, and one of them asked me if I would make a sign for his shop," says Firth. "Soon, I was doing them for loads of the small businesses, and we became friendly at last."

What do the visitors think about Lamrou challenging their right to be called lesbians? "Thank God Sappho was born on Lesbos, not Rhodes," says Sandra, on holiday from Leeds with a group of friends to celebrate her 60th birthday. "Or we would be stuck being known as Rhodesians."

Lisa Evans is in Eressos for her fourth season, working at Aubergine. "Lots of Greek girls, from Athens and other islands, come here to be together," says Evans. "They can be themselves, and blend into the crowd."

"In this village, people are so used to lesbians that if the returning tourists come on holiday with a different partner, the locals notice. And if a couple [enter into a civil partnership], and come here on their honeymoon, locals often send champagne or flowers to them." One tourist, from London, tells me that when she split up with her girlfriend, whom she had been on holiday to the village with the year before, some of the islanders refused to speak to her when she turned up with a new woman. "They thought I was cheating on my ex," she laughs.

"At the end of the day, this is a Greek village," says Jansen, "not a lesbian one. It has not been 'invaded', or taken over. More than anything, it is cosmopolitan."

The name of island is Lesbos and the people are Lesbians (capital L).
this is where the word ''lesbian'' came from.

Some people also call it Mytilini, even though Mitilini is actually only a town in Lesbos, but they do it to avoid such "misunderstandings".
