DNA match links man to 2001 death of woman in Oklahoma City
A convicted murderer was accused Thursday of fatally beating an Oklahoma City woman to death on Halloween 14 years ago. Willie Lewis Hayden Jr. was charged with first-degree murder after DNA evidence linked him to the death.

The victim was identified as Vera Louise Gowers, 37, who also went by Vera Allen. Her body was found about 12:15 a.m., Nov. 1, 2001, near railroad tracks in the 1400 block of S Pennsylvania Avenue in Oklahoma City.
Investigators reported two blood-covered pipes were lying beside the victim. The state medical examiner ruled the death a homicide "caused by blunt force trauma to the facial area."
Evidence at the scene led investigators to believe the victim could have been raped.
