Yes, I was very nervous and had a lot of adrenaline. I woke up one morning and checked my email, saw the results were in, and my heart stopped. I was so scared.

Yeah, I was kidding. I imagine I'll feel much the same when I do mine, and I've no doubt I'm my parents' son, for better or worse.

Not really. In fact, when I first ordered from 23andMe, I was expecting a 100% European and 80% British and Irish result.

Not about the ethnicity percentage, I was more nervous about the health issue.

If I am going to be completely honest I was a tiny bit nervous. "please dont be MENA, please don't be MENA" haha. I don't have anything against MENA's or Turks, but as a South European there is always that mocking nordicist in your head going "wogs are arabs!", and its more about how I always saw myself. Then lo and behold, results came back and were pretty much exactly what I thought they would look like.

I was the opposite. I wanted MENA and Sub-Saharan to both show. And they did.

I know I'm half French-Canadian, 25% Irish, and 25% Italian so I basically knew what I was going to get.

However I'm more into my southern euro ancestry and was hoping to find more Iberian, Italian, Greek, and maybe a little MENA
This is for a couple of reasons.
1. I wanted to know why the fuck my dad's phenotype is so damn southern shifted even though he's French-Canadian.
-Scoring high Iberian or a little MENA/SSA would have given me the explanation that I desired.

2. I wanted to see my Italian show up because my Italian grandmother is my closest relative and I'm very proud of my Italian ancestry.

3. I wanted to see some Greek because I love Greece, but sadly no Balkan showed up.

4. I wanted to see Native American because I am 1.5 Native American, I don't really have any pride in it or anything, but I'd like my results to be as accurate as possible.

I was mostly satisfied with my results, although I would have liked for them to have been more specific. I mainly wanted a stronger emphasis on Southern European groups because I want my phenotype to match my genotype as much as possible. I just don't like the inconsistencies between my name, my actual ancestry, and how people perceive me etc. I was happy to see some Iberian since many people see me as Iberian but also disappointed because I know damn well that's just Southern French.

Getting 3.6% French was disappointing. I don't like France or anything, but 3.6% is just plane innaccurate consideirng I'm ~50%

The one dissatisfied with her results is my mother. Many calculators, tests, etc. inflate her 'British' ancestry (which does not exist) and really, she comes up as if she is more Northern shifted than she'd like. She comes up often as the midpoint of Polish and Iberian, which comes out British, German or Dutch, with some Sub-Saharan African.

I think she wanted something exotic to show up, like North African, or Hawaiian.

I was exited when ordering my kit, however when waiting for the results I was in NYC having fun so I completely forgot about it. Then one day I got the email notifying these were ready, and I checked with a bit of excitement, but mostly curiosity. But when my sister got it months after me I was really exited to see her results, because I had got so much into DNA that now everything took a new dimension.....then I joined TA :D My mom is gonna be next and I know Im gonna be super exited to see her results.

It reflects a shared ancestry between west Iberians and British Isles (mainly Irish)

Yeah can't you hire a charter? That's how we do it in Uruguay. You just buy the kit through a Brasilian charter company with a location in USA, they get the package and send it to you. It's quite easy and I'm sure you must have this kind of services there. The comission is very low, as it depends on the weight and the kit is super light, here they charge only $5 for sending it to you.

As France and french can still command genetic kits even if it is illegal.

By the way I already knew, more or less, where my family came from and my results were expected. The only surprise was to have native blood which I knew was a possibility because there are a couple of branches in my family I dont know much about. Same with my iberian side, that's all shady so I didn't know how much Iberian I was gonna score.

I was also expecting more middle eastern. The only thing that I expected and was confirmed was my predominant italian DNA which I'm glad since that's what both sides of my family are closer to.

My guess is she wanted her genotype to match her phenotype as well as her actual ancestry. This was the case with my as well :) I think this is a common problem among people with Northern/Southern Euro ancestry.

No but I did AncestryDna which is supposed to be most accurate of all autosmal tests so I'm more curious than 23andme or ftdna as to the outcome.

She wanted results that confirmed that she feels closer to both full Southern Europeans as well as mixed-race Latinas. She identifies 0% with Eastern Europe. I think she wanted nonwhite admixture, just not African (though she has now accepted it). Though common sense was that she would have African, but not anything else non-European.

From looking at other N/C Italian results I had a feeling my dads side wouldn't show up much MENA; but from my Greek side I wasn't sure... with the long Turk occupation getting some admixture is a very real possibility. One of my "2nd cousins" on 23andMe from Amorgos (quite close to Turkey) has 30% MENA (the MENA sections on his chromosome view are the Italian sections on mine, so can't be from our shared ancestry). I just have always identified as South European, and nobody wants their deeply held identity challenged.

As an analogy, imagine a computer that has a certain hardware configuration and in which are installed certain software. The analogy of DNA results in this case would be receiving datasheets of various components.
What would they change?
If it was a slow computer it will continue to be a slow computer and if it was a fast computer it will continue to be a fast computer. All that changes is that now you understand why.
