His skull was examined by Russian anthropologists who believed that it might be a human-Neanderthal hybrid. However, a 2006 examination at New York University revelaed that the skull's DNA was that of a modern human, thus closing a thirty-year-long debate in Cryptozoological circles.

To me it looks like he could have Afro-Abkhazian ancestry, wich would explain some of his negroid traits.

Zana might have simply been suffering of Hypertrichosis like the famous Julia Pastrana.
People suffering from Congential Hyperthricosis also posses thick lips and flat noses as well as sloping eyes.

Her son Khwit reminds of Armenian and Georgian types.
