First Irish Genome Sequenced (http://www.sciencecentric.com/news/10090717-first-irish-genome-sequenced.html)

Nearly 200,000 indels and over 3 million SNPs were identified in the Irish genome sequence. Of the SNPs, 13% were novel, potentially including markers specific to Irish ancestry or indicators of disease. In particular, one of the new SNPs interferes with the production of a macrophage-stimulating protein, thought to be associated with inflammatory bowel disease and chronic liver disease.

An Irish Times article: Irish person's genetic code sequenced for the first time (http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/frontpage/2010/0907/1224278367050.html)

SCIENTISTS HAVE sequenced the complete genetic code of an Irish person for the first time. The 3.1 billion sub-units of DNA that comprise the human genome were mapped by a team from the Conway Institute at University College Dublin, using advanced sequencing technology.

It will be interesting, in the coming years, to see the first full genome sequencing of all the various peoples of the world. And what each new sequence will contribute to our understanding of humanity in its totality.
