Statistics Estonia reports that the first week of its Agricultural Census has been successful, with 1,500 electronic questionnaires completed and nearly another 1,000 half done. The success, it says, is thanks to the introduction of an e-census.

“This is the first time that participation in the census is open via internet and respondents have used this opportunity quite actively," said Eve Valdvee, Statistics Estonia’s Project Manager for the census.

"We hope of course that the e-census participation will increase because we aim to collect as much data as possible via internet,” said Valdvee, noting that all data on the land use and animals submitted earlier to the Agricultural Registers and Information Board have already been pre-filled in the electronic questionnaire.

The census collects data on agricultural holdings that have at least one hectare of utilized agricultural land or where agricultural products are produced mainly for sale. There are nearly 30,000 such holdings in Estonia.

The data will form the basis for preparing the EU Common Agricultural Policy and for decision making in matters related to agricultural subsidies.

The Agricultural Census is being conducted for the sixth time in Estonia. They have been held in 1919, 1925, 1929, 1939 and after the restoration of independence in 2001. In European Union countries, similar censuses take place every ten years.
