he's an ethnic italian from South Tyrol belonging to a regional group called Ladins. he legally changed his name from Hans-Georg to Giovanni Giorgio because he obviously wanted to be identified as italian. his surname comes from latin murator that means bricklayer. it's not like one of those Basques surnames like Echeverria or Arrigorriagakoa that have a totally different ethymology from Spanish since Basque is totally unrelated to Spanish.

Being a Ladin, Moroder is not properly an ethnic Italian, let's say he's almost ethnically Italian.

These photos (young and old) define him as some sort of Alpinized Mediterranean:

It's a bit more complicated and easier at the same time. Btw genetically Ladins are part of North-Eastern Italian cluster. I have friends who are Ladin and they consider themselves Italian. Others probably less or not.

I saw quite a few, and in Switzerland and Germany also. Alpine-Meds are relatively common in all the Alpine region.

The older generation of my relatives can speak the Milanese dialect, they are in their late 70's/80's. Younger people still learn it ?

Sure. Obviously they are tendentially more depigmented Alpine-Med, and among south Germans there are also some southern CMs. Of course always in the midst of a significant number of Nordics/subnordids/norids/....

My grandmother. I can speak "Trentino" better than Milanese because my mother is from there and was born there.
