View Full Version : What Did You Want To Be?

UkrainianGirl

What did you want to be when you grew up? And did you accomplish it? Why or why not?
Discuss.

As a little girl in Ukraine I spent a lot of time outside and was into science. I liked bugs, the idea of surgery, and things and wanted to be a doctor. I loved going to the doctor as a kid and was excited to ask what everything was and what it was used for. Needles were cool and I didn't mind shots. Today I am an instructor and accountant. Why? Because now I can't stand blood, needles, bugs, etc. Hospitals make me feel uneasy.

When I was seven I wanted to be a heart surgeon.
Then I wanted to be an estate agent and sell houses.
Then I wanted to be an explosives technologist.
During high school I wanted to be a funeral director.

In my early twenties I wanted to a paramedic (and became one).

Now I am in the health field and work in an area (voluntarily) where the mortality rate is extremely high. I stand between life and death, with one foot in the living world and the other one in the hereafter.

I love my job. I couldn't imagine doing anything else. I read a blog a while ago where they call people like me "the gatekeepers". We open the gates when it is time to go.

It doesn't make me sad at all. Death is a beautiful thing which is part of life. There is no division between the two. It is all the same.

Death is a fascinating process. People are under an impression that people just fade away, when in reality death is a very active process. The body progressively starts shutting down, one system after the other, in a sequence. Just like the body of a new-born knows how to breathe, the body also knows how to die, in which sequence. It almost like a "death instinct". I cannot describe it any other way. It is like a built-in knowledge of what must happen and when.

What does make me sad is when people leave their loved ones alone (with gatekeepers like me) because death is not something they want in their homes.

Ok your answer is different then I thought. I expected the "death process" to bring back sad personal memories for you. But I also should have known better. You are a strong person and being a gatekeeper works well for you. Maybe even more so for you since you understand what is going on both physically and emotionally.

And yes the body knows how and when to go shut down. It's all programmed. It's a system all of it's own. And everyone has their way of responding or coping to a death.

And yeah that is saddening. They should pass knowing they aren't alone and are loved. Should make it easier on them passing as well.

That makes me remember! When I was 10 I wanted to be an Egyptologist. I was fascinated by the Egyptian gods and goddesses. I went to the library every day after school to read about Egypt. I had them all memorised, who did what. I knew about the pyramids, the Sphinx, other sacred sites in Egypt. I knew the pharaohs. If it was about Egypt, I knew it! Don't ask me to remember half it today!

I am not going to say on here not to trigger the naysayers and sexists but no I did not accomplish it because my family became to broke to afford University many years ago so I had to drop out. And so instead I was stuck working random minimum wage jobs and doing volunteer work and random online classes. I am back in school now many years later but it has been hard to keep the same motivation I used to have, not only considering that I don't like the area I live in or that my school is in at all and want to move out as soon as possible. I am honestly worried I am going to be less desirable when I graduate school at around 30 ish I am scared to get any older and most people I know have already graduated ahhh it makes me feel so fucking left behind and not only that I don't even have a partner .

So no in conclusion I am definitely not what I wanted to be but It's not 100% my fault. And sure I will say I did learn some valuable things and great skills from low wage jobs that school would not have taught me, but its hard a lot of people judge me as being behind and immature even though I've always done everything I could to be responsible and more mature than other more "privileged" people despite the fact I do not have all the material things people expect of me at this age.

I just want to be happy and do good in the world and be a good role model. I also want to be someone who discovers cool things and helps others. I also want to be loved as well very much so. I guess I have to try and be happy with myself in the end, but yeah it sucks I don't even have good looks to make up for some of my troubles I really wish I was good and unique looking.

I just wanna find the right path get the fucking naysayers out of my fucking way for good!!

Anyways I'm sorry if people on here are getting annoyed with these types of posts I'm making....I'm just stressed and frustrated. If I said something that made you feel bad I'm sorry.

I'm from family of people who always used to trade, kept shops (father's side since 1830s), actually that's what I'm doing most of my life. I used to have some regular jobs, including office ones, but it was always not serious. Buy-sell-buy is my destiny and I do it quite well and someway always expected to do it. I remember in elementary school my classmate was like wtf when he asked me the question and I answered that I will probably keep some shop or something like this lol. Now it's fused with other spheres but it's still generally like this.

In school I was already reselling CDs with music, I visited flea markets with my mate to buy and resell some stuff, everything possible.

I don't think that everything in life should be "for fun". 90% of people work for money, not for fun. If a man can maintain the whole family with his income, it's way more natural for a female to be a housewife, working for her spouse and kids, not for some unknown people, seeing her kids few hours before sleep.

I'm aware of it, it's a matter of choice, I just tell how normally a family as part of society functions, if its purpose not having fun until the divorce when everyone had enough of fun or again to live together for some shared hedonistic purposes.

Anyway, for 80-90% of people Worldwide nothing changed since 90s, for you and me maybe, but globally nothing changed for majority of people. People work for money at regular jobs.

My mom was the first from her side to step to the path of trade, finishing the economical facultee. All of her ancestors were generally army men as well, there are such people at father's side, too, but main are two big branches of Moscow merchants, his ancestor came to Moscow from Ryazan region as free wealthy peasant and opened a shop here. My father used to sell all possible stuff during USSR before going into trade few years after the army, from gramophone records of foreign music to reprints of Mein Kampf. He lived next to park Sokolniki and as some 12-13 years old kid he started from exchanging the Soviet pins with foreigners who came to exhibitions for bubble gum, not to chew, but sell it, with these money he bought caviar from same exhibiton which was way more cheap than somewhere in trade and sold it to some woman he knew who worked in restaurant.

I've already mentioned, after army he started to work as butcher which bring a lot of money, parallely getting economical education so then he entered the Soviet trade, if you were there, it was already Communism for you and party members literally bowed to such people as a source of everything.

Can you really solve complex problems? Hardly. It's incredible if you solve simple problems in the 3rd grade of a white school. I do not believe.

I turn any simple and simple fact into insolvable problems, perhaps I should have dedicated myself to politics.

I don't believe that children and adults should be in different categories in the eyes of a ruler, after all, they are both equally manipulable.

I lie, adults are more easily manipulated than children.

It's more than ok to write these posts. If you want to express yourself, you're more than welcome, don't apologise.

Since I can remember, the first thing I wanted to become was a doctor, because of my godmother who, as a doctor herself, helped us a lot.

Then, as I saw that I cannot handle blood and that I'm basically a hypochondriac, I focused on more theoretical stuff, aka law. But since, for a tiny margin, didn't get into law school, I'm now hoping, after my uni, to go either in public administration or in diplomacy.

It`s not really the pay, but more the fact that it`s sadly a field that`s long been declining due to being underfunded, so getting a job there is basically a miracle.
But yes, it was really fulfilling and interesting work. I wouldnt want to trade that experience for anything else.

I am not an Israel supporter myself. Dad is but he is also a Jewish Boomer, so predictably a bit closed minded and set in his ways. He is comfortable with Gazans being annihilated if absolutely necessary for Israel's interests, which sounds like Zionist chauvinism. I can't argue because he is too emotional with regards to the subject. I also have 3rd cousins living in Israel but have no clue as to their whereabouts.

Russian is a mother tongue for ~70% of Belorussia citizens. 23% of those who speak native dialects mainly exist on the Belorussian territory of pre 1939 Poland and some rural areas. Three Eastern regions were annexed to Belorussian Soviet republic in early 20s but were never properly Belorussized.

It's the same in here. There are plenty of sites and probably a ton of stuff that can be discovered, but no one has the interest to fund archeological work to that level (on top of that, when they do some digging, some of the finds are being destroyed by the carelessness of the workers). I was under the impression that in Western Europe it's different.
But yeah, while it's very interesting work, only few can to live from this.

Yes, how does it contradict anything I said?
I just wanted to pinpoint this "dialect" is an umbrella term for spectrum of different dialects and same as for any Slavic language. There will always be differences within same language. And Belarusian even if almost dead is still a language in sense of spectrum of dialects sandwiched between south Russians, Ukrainians, Poles and Balts. And there are quite differences within dialects than just some slang words in the video I replied to you with before.
