Japan's demographic challenges are well-known: It's home to the world's oldest population and has a shrinking birthrate and an astonishing number of single people. And it seems that, despite government efforts to incentivise marriage and child-rearing, things aren't quite trending in the right direction.

According to the Japan Times, a new survey of Japanese people ages 18 to 34 found that 70 percent of unmarried men and 60 percent of unmarried women are not in a relationship. It gets worse: Around 42 percent of men and 44.2 percent of women admitted that they were virgins.

The study is carried out by Japan's National Institute of Population and Social Security Research every five years. The organization has noted a marked trend since its first foray on questions of relationships and sex in 1987, when it found that 48.6 percent of men and 39.5 percent of women surveyed were unmarried. In 2010, 36.2 percent of men and 38.7 percent of women in the 18-34 age bracket said they were virgins. The number of children among couples who have been married for between 15 and 19 years averaged a record low this year.

The Japanese government under Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has said it wants to raise the nation's fertility rate from 1.4 to 1.8 by 2025. It's offering better child-care services and tax incentives for married couples, though such programs have yet to bear statistical fruit.

Most people surveyed said they want to get married at some point. It's just not clear when.

"They want to tie the knot eventually. But they tend to put it off as they have gaps between their ideals and the reality," Futoshi Ishii, head researcher for the study, told Japan Times. "That's why people marry later or stay single for life, contributing to the nation's low birthrate."

This is not unique to Japan — in various parts of the developed world, economic uncertainty is reshaping the way millennials and other young people conceive of their sex lives and marital choices. But it's particularly pronounced in the Asian nation, where experts and government officials have spent the better part of a decade fretting over the country's population decline and, as WorldViews once put it, "sexual apathy."

A booming industry surrounds Japan's growing condition of loneliness, a phenomenon at once quite particular to the Japanese, yet also a glimpse into a future where many people live atomized lives mediated exclusively through personal technology.

There was one clearly positive indicator in the survey: For the first time, the proportion of women returning to work after having their first child in Japan's once notoriously patriarchal society exceeded 50 percent.

Yeah, the anime culture is very harmful. I have only been to Japan during a one day over night stay on the way back to the US so haven't really gotten a chance to check it out. I need to go back. Last year, I was in Taiwan for a week and they are heavily influenced by Japanese culture and it felt like an island full of kids, where all the signs are in anime, the train tokens are shaped like little game tokens, politicians use animation characters to express themselves, people were overly nice.

It was a huge contrast from being in Beijing where you have photos of soldiers and the military everywhere, and people are a lot more aggressive.

but if you spend most of your teenage years closed at home and school you will most likely end up a grown up kid by the age of 18 , maybe universities dont make things any better (although i have heard that many are far from being selective and that they allow in problematic guys from rich families just for money) , overworking in a office definetely doesnt. you need to interact a lot with people to develop an "adult-like" mind. i didnt because i have spent most of my life as isolated so i do see it .. anime culture definetely doesnt help either. i am basically like a 8 years old girl with a high iq (not saying that i am smarter than average as an adult but i would if i got the same level of intelligence at 8 lol )

Part of it is a cultural issue. Japanese culture really emphasizes someone having their own personal space, also over-politeness, so people are used to putting up a facade and they rarely intrude or interfere with someone else's life. People are very cold and closed off there, and they don't get involved with each other's lives. So it leads to a lot of loneliness.

A lot of counties with similarly low birth rates are nowhere close to being overcrowded(mine is a good example ). Low birth rate is consequence of modern life style where people can afford protection and want to provide the best for their children rather than having many children and not provide them with anything. More children means simply less attention given to each of them also less financial support for university,succeeding in life etc.

I also think it would affect the cohesiveness of squads. Women in combat would be an unnecessary danger to their's and the men's lives. Also some uniforms used in the military weight up to 60 pounds! I am not saying women aren't strong, but they aren't strong enough. What if one of her fellow soldiers fell down and she was the only one around to save him. He weighs 200 pounds but with the 60 pounds worth of uniform...260 pounds. Say she weighs 190 pounds with her uniforms on. Will she be able to lift his weight plus the extra 120 pounds of uniform? I really don't think she can. Personally, having a girl in my squad would be too stressful and I personally don't believe women are designed for the military or combat. Having women in your armed forces is going down a beta road and displays weakness.

I'm not against women serving. But I think political correctness needs to stay out of the military. A women should serve only when they prove they are just as or more capable than the male soldiers, not because they want to promote gender equality. The military should be the last place for political correctness, it should be a pure meritocracy.

the funny thing is that the political correctness about it is a slap to feminism and to those strong women who fought hard , by working like men , to join the military if not even the special forces.
the issue is that many armies in the world allow women in but they slo dont really allow them to take riskious tasks, because they know most of them are too weak .. now i wonder what is even the purpose in the military if you arent highly specialized and can't engage in the battlefield. cooking for the other soldiers? xD

Part of it is a cultural issue. Japanese culture really emphasizes someone having their own personal space, also over-politeness, so people are used to putting up a facade and they rarely intrude or interfere with someone else's life.
