Is it really Dutch? It sounds German to me.

Isn't Old English actually Dutch? :D

I think German rather than Dutch in origin. But then again, the distinction between these two ethnicities have never in history been clear-cut. However I would imagine Ackerman as originating in Germany proper, rather than the Low Countries. Guess-work on my part.

Acker is a term of endearment in the West Country. It means friend or mate, as in: "Alright me old acker"

I think in the context of Ackerman, it refers to a field - i.e. acker in German, akker in Dutch. ;)

Or, in Old English, ęcermann.

Correct, according to Reaney it means a Farmer, Husbandman or Ploughman. Its most common variants here are Ackerman and Akerman. This name via local variants can be found in Germany, Netherlands, Switzerland etc at differing frequencies.

The person in question was from Brussels so I thought Dutch/Flemish. Same thing, right?

Ackermann? I've only seen Ashkenazi Jews with that surname, in Argentina... I guess they use it too, just like with many other German surnames.

Most Jews bare surnames that are of Central European origin, they also carry English surnames or anglicized versions of the aforementioned.

Åkerman is not uncommon over here.

Akkerman

Missed this post. It was actually spelled like that but the French version would be with ck.
