Don’t know about that though, usually you will lose some ability to digest lactose if you are old, even if you could digest it in adulthood.

I used to be like a calf, milk everyday, even milk from the farm.. nowadays I drink a little of it and I feel awful, I think I may have become intolerant.. but this only happens to milk itself other dairy products are ok.

I actually stopped doing "dairy" in the 1980's when I began to follow a macrobiotic diet. I guess I was sort of an early "vegan." When I reduced my dairy intake I no longer had ear, nose and throat issues which I attributed to the antiobiotics being administered to "cows" and/or my own adverse reaction to an over consumption of dairy as a typical American child growing up in the 1960's.

Nope, not everyone - many Europeans are lactose intolerant.

And ancient Europeans who lived before the Bronze Age, most probably could not drink milk at all.

Are we talking about goat's milk or cow's milk. Didn't goats precede cows in Europe? I'm much more tolerant to goat's milk.

Unless you have some kind of an allergy to dairy I don't really see how dairy could be responsible for those issues. Barring allergies or lactose intolerant- dairy is pretty good for you. The broad sweeping demonization of dairy seems to stem from vegans...

That probably contains errors, for me seeing a lactose intolerant person is like seeing a left-handed person: it surprises me. But it may be a family bias though I doubt it.

East Asians are generally lactose intolerant so it probably has to do with that. As bizarre as it'd be for Mongolians.

That map does not make sense at least for Spain, we all descend from northern (iberian) populations.

I think it is a common thing to see lactose intolerance begin to show up as one is getting aged? I had no problem at all like 5-6 years ago, now a small piece of cheese(not to mention drinking milk) makes me sick the whole day.

Same here. I stopped to drink milk in the 25 age. 23andme classified me as intolerant, so it is probably possible to drink milk at younger age even if you are genetically intolerant.

Mongols drink kumis - fermented milk. Fermentation of milk breaks down lactose, so they can drink it.

Yes , I stopped at 18 before that I had no problem, but at this age I started having episodes of diarea and vomiting, sometimes fever too, they lasted one to three days and it was very bad, and I cut milk to see if it would stop and it did, never happened again, I dont know if I am lactose intolerant or what tho.

If you have a problem with cheese than it suggests that you may have a different problem - cow milk protein allergy. But yes, it tends to get worse with age. For me I only started having problems with digesting milk as a teenager.

The amount of lactose in most kinds of cheese is way too low to possibly cause gastric issues. It's all been 'eaten away' by the bacteria in the process of making cheese.

Old post to reply to, but it's because they ferment the lactose out of most of the products. Fermenting milk products greatly lowers lactose levels. Kumisz/Kimiz was also a staple calorie drink of the Hungarians before settling into Europe.

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/7076958/

Hard cheeses also have less lactose because of how the aging process works. When I was a younger teen, hard cheeses were the only dairy I could tolerate, and only in small amounts.

Yep I am lactose tolerant, I would hate to be intolerant as I love cheese, butter, ice cream, etc lol. My mom was lactose tolerant her whole life but around her late 30s, early 40s she became intolerant for some reason. I feel so bad for her sometimes bcs she has cravings for ice cream or a nice grilled cheese sandwich and she says "fuck it" and eats it, hours later shes fucking up the toilet and regretting every decision she made that made her be at that point XD.

After that I bought her those tablets that are those lactose enzymes, so u can eat dairy products even if u are tolerant, and its been a miracle, now if she gets cravings she just takes a tablet and shes good. My mom is super funny and the best XD.

Exactly, in the fermentation process of ayrag/kumis/kefir lactose becomes food for fermenting microbes.
