My paternal family thought they were full blooded Italian. So much for that. With my Y Chromosome being R1A1A I am assuming Slavic origin??? My most recent paternal ancestry from Calabria, Italy. Thoughts or insights appreciated. I'm actually pleased with the diversity.

I am trying to figure out what makes up the rest of your Italian side besides Italy/Greece. Calabrese typically have more West Asian, but maybe it came through other components this time.

You need to order R1a SNP Pack and see what is your subclade of R1a.

Some subclades are not Slavic.

On 23andme I've matched up with a lot of Slavs. Also, what service do you suggest?

I tested with FTDNA but probably 23andMe is better when it comes to testing autosomal DNA.

When it comes to Y-DNA haplogroups - do they offer some equivalent of FTDNA's SNP Packs?:

On 23andme I've matched up with a lot of Slavs.

This means nothing, you match up with them just because you share R1a.

But it doesn't necessarily mean that your R1a is a typically Slavic subclade.

I also have matches with people who are not DF27>L617, but some other R1b.

In general SNPs are superior to STRs, at least when you order low number of STRs. For example I ordered 12 STR markers and then upgraded to 37 STRs. From 12 STR markers you can only learn very basic things, like R1a or R1b. And 37 STRs is still not enough to determine subclade with certainty; after ordering 37 STRs it was only quite obvious that I have R1b-P312, but it was still not obvious which is my exact subclade.

Based on 37 STRs I was actually predicted to be L21 or U152, and it was wrong.

I also transfered results from Ancestry to DNAland where they identified North Slavic.

How much "North Slavic" ???

"North Slavic" is a rather ancient component - some ancient DNA samples score a lot of "North Slavic" (for example Eastern Hunters, Khvalynsk culture, Corded Ware, Late Bronze Age Lithuania, etc.).

It is named "North Slavic" because it is most common in North-Eastern Europe today.

It could actually be called "North-Eastern European minus Finnish" as well. ;)

It is most common in Belarusians, Lithuanians, Latvians and Russians.

===================

If you have R1a then it is very probable that it comes from Slavs.

However, you should really check what is your subclade of R1a.

Would the 67 marker test be enough?

PROBABLY FROM A CROAT PIRATE

Or from these Slavic guys (Narentines, aka "Pagans" because they opposed Christianisation for a long time):

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Narentines

Interestingly, Calabria has an area named "Pagania" (maybe some Narentines settled there?):

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pagania_(disambiguation)

- Pagania was a name for the medieval realm of the Narentines.

- Pagania, Italy, a commune near Acri, Calabria

That would be interesting with my family being mostly Christians.

I'm not 100% sure, but IMO it is better to buy SNP Pack instead of trying more STRs.

That's what people told me when I was considering whether to buy 67 STRs or SNP Pack.

STRs are a "thing of the past", SNPs are better - if you want to know you subclade.

I would advice you to buy SNP Pack - it is even cheaper than 67 STRs, IIRC.

Hehe. Well, eventually even those "Pagans" converted to Christianity.

"R1a-Backbone SNP Pack" is what you need.

Can you order it from FTDNA without ordering STRs?

If not, then order 12 STRs and then this SNP Pack.

Is it possible to transfer STR results from 23andMe?

Ancient man RISE598 (Late Bronze Age Turlojiškė) scores 100% North Slavic (!) in DNA Land:

He lived around 908 - 485 BC, close to the present-day Lithuanian-Polish border (map below):

RISE598 is one of ancient guys whose DNA was published by Allentoft in 2015 (link):

Balts and Slavs are similar genetically, they share Proto-Balto-Slavic ancestors:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proto-Balto-Slavic_language

RISE598 was probably a Baltic-speaker, or maybe Balto-Slavic before they split.
