A high profile Diwali party for expatriates in Mumbai has a curt message for Indians: Keep away.
The Elite Expats Club—part of the Mumbai Expats Club, which aims to “bring together all the expatriates from different nationalities under one roof”—recently sent out invites calling on foreigners to attend a city event on Oct.27 to mark Diwali.
For the most part, the emailed invitation runs along conventional lines. Towards the end, though, it contains the following: “Kindly note that this event is strictly for expats and Indian delegates. It would be highly appreciated if locals are not escorted unless they hold a govt. political portfolio or are diplomats.”
It further said that two senior foreign diplomats, besides other guests, had agreed to be part of the function. Ugo Ciarlatani, the Italian consul general in Mumbai, would be the chief guest. Jennifer Larson, the deputy principal officer at the American consulate in the city, would the guest of honour.
Ironically, the founder of the club is Savio D’sa, an Indian, born and raised in the Mumbai suburb of Mulund.
“We do not have locals joining the Elite Expat Club event purely to ensure the security protocol, considering the profile of people being invited,” D’sa told Quartz. “We have a separate event for the Mumbai Expat club where locals will be allowed.”
When probed on the details of the event for “locals,” D’sa was evasive. “We keep having such events. We’ll have one for Christmas. But nothing for Diwali as of now,” he said.
Quartz reached out to the Italian and US consulates in Mumbai, seeking their responses.
On Oct.21, the Italian consulate explained in an email that the invite received by them “has no mention of the said remark and in fact stated that both expats and those of Indian nationality are invited for this event.”
“Consul general Ugo Ciarlatani does not hold or endorse the view that has been sought to be put across in the mail with the said inappropriate statement, and has instantly withdrawn his participation from the said event,” the consulate added.
The US consulate was yet to respond.
The egregious Mumbai event is not a rare one in India. In 2009, for instance, American ice cream brand Haagen Dazs kicked up a furore when it put up signboards at its New Delhi outlet, which said, “Entry restricted only to holders of international passports.”

These are the urban elites who all want to act as Westernised as possible, just look at how Bollywood has been ruined by these people. Before the films where admired for there stories but now it's turned into a load of Hollywood rip-off trash.

Rural Elites (landowners) are more conservative and traditional in comparison.

China and India are relatively comparable in many aspects, but Chinese elites don't act like this, infact the opposite.

That's because the Chinese are the elite in the entire yellow race. While the Indians are the weakest in the indo-european race.

Im not saying I disagree or agree with the Chinese being the elite of the Mongoloid race, but don't you think the Japanese will have something to say about that? Also it depends on what measure you are basing this on.

"Elite" and even upper middle class Indians think they are better than everyone, including whites; they're as bad as Arab sheiks.

While the elite Indians might be very snobby and superficial, they are not as degenerate and sleezy as the Arab shieks who are into sick practices. And From what I have seen, Indian elites don't really look down on white, instead they try to be a part of Western society.

I can only speak from my experience, which is limited, although I have known and worked with many haughty Indians and Arabs and had to put up with their troubled egos.

Sleaziness and degeneracy is a different matter. I agree I haven't noticed much of that in Indians, while I have heard many Arabs boasting of using prostitutes, engaging in group sex, sex with men, etc. But the fact remains that most of the Indians I've dealt with come from more privileged backgrounds in India and they bring their privileged mindset with them to the West. Unfortunately for them, it doesn't earn them any privilege or respect here.

And From what I have seen, Indian elites don't really look down on white, instead they try to be a part of Western society.

They look down on anyone whom they consider inferior in terms of pedigree, which includes many whites. There is an unstable mix of inferiority complex and a sense of superiority and they tend to be very sensitive, can snap and start throwing accusations of racism etc. in an instant.

The japanese became great because of the western (white-race) funding and western merciless advertising . It is pretty much like Germany in Europe. Leaders can be only independent nations whose elite uses exclusively local culture/language. Also look at the population numbers : 1B vs 100M says smth on its own. Chinese have a greater history and civilization than the Japanese. Also, Japan was isolated for many years, while China always was in communication with the rest of the world. China was never conquered, that's for sure.

Most Chinese "elites" were poor in their lifetimes or at least are not rich past one generation because of communism. In other words, China's elite is very porous and social mobility is high. China is also fast becoming a middle class country, in the next 20 years, it will likely transition into a majority middle class nation.

As for the elite in the Mongoloid race, I guess Japan has earned that title for the last 120 years. But they are fast losing it, China's taking it back now.

That was not natural. If you see the historical events Japan became to be "great" around the years of the Russo-Japanese war. Apparently the Saxons-Goths had invested heavily into making Japan an industrial force in order to fight against GothoSaxon's worst enemy ever : THE SLAVS. Japan was used against Russia (leaders of the SLAVS) and against China (leaders of the yellow) as well. On the contrary, when Japan posed claims of becoming an independent factor in the region, the Saxons (leaders of the Goths) devastated Japan in a heartbeat.

Well, yes, Japan was a useful ally against the Russians. But to give credit where it's due, the Japanese are responsible for making their country great. But yeah, unlike many commonly held perceptions nowadays, Japan only became a significant nation in the late 19th century. Before then, it was no more significant than Cambodia or the Uyghurs or Tibet.

Definitely. They worked so hard and created products more complex and more efficient than many western designs. Full credit for their hard work, innovation and efficiency.

dont know if that is self-hate, I lack context here. Its a expatriat party, attending indian officials etc. Its a special gathering, a specific party etc. dont think they are self-haters for that. Maybe Im wrong, but dont see it.

It's not self hate, if you don't view the lower class masses as "your people", just like the WASP elite and their scorn for the average white man.

It also helps if you look significantly different, which is what phrenology was about, iirc.

Can you elaborate on why this should be considered a "typical colonial mindset"?
