Wiki (French): "Charles Eugene de Foucauld de Pontbriand, born 15 September 1858 in Strasbourg (France) and died on 1 December 1916 in the Algerian Sahara, is a French army officer turned explorer and geographer, and Catholic religious hermit and linguist.
The family of Charles de Foucauld is from the Périgord and belongs to the old French nobility; their motto is: "Never back". Several of his ancestors participated in the Crusades, a source of great prestige in the French aristocracy. His great-uncle, Armand de Foucauld de Pontbriand, vicar general and cousin of the Archbishop of Arles, Bishop Jean Marie du Lau, and the Archbishop himself, are victims of the September massacres, during the Revolution. His mother, Elizabeth of Morlet, comes from the aristocracy Lorraine, while his grandfather, a Republican, made his fortune during the Revolution. Elizabeth wife of Morlet in 1855 of Edward Viscount Foucauld de Pontbriand, forest inspector. From their union was born July 17, 1857 a child named Charles, who died at the age of one month."
