They seem like an interesting people, they apparently were Hindus and became Muslims due to Arab traders. However their Islam was isolated and developed in its own way.

Yeah, they were the original people of Southern Vietnam I believe. The Northern Vietnamese, who were a Chinese province for 1000 years and are a highly sinicized people, eventually conquered and absorbed them. That's why Southern Vietnamese look darker and have more Cambodian traits, also more lacking in self discipline and are less reserved than the Northern Vietnamese.
