On Wednesday, students in Tallinn’s Freedom Square will celebrate the Estonian day of resistance and the brief but memorable government of Otto Tief.
Gathering at the independence monument, students will sing and pay their respects to forefathers and fallen statesmen who strived for an independent Estonia.
A memorial service at Narva’s Alexander church will follow, with the opening of a new cemetery monument for those who died in the prison camps.
On September 18, 1944, interim president Jüri Uluots inaugurated the government of Otto Tief, which declared neutrality in the war between Germany and the Soviet Union. Tief’s government only lasted for four days because on September 22, the Red Army captured Tallinn. In 2007, Parliament recognized September 22 as the Day of Resistance.
The Republic of Estonia has had a total of 18 heads of state or acting heads of state, of whom five were in exile.
