A 22-year-old Estonian woman, Heleen Vennikas, has set a new record as the youngest athlete ever to finish the Spartathlon, a grueling, 246-kilometer ultramarathon race from Athens to Sparta.

Vennikas finished with a time of 35:05:52, crossing the finish line together with her father, Peeter Vennikas, on Saturday. The pair finished in 100th and 101st place, reported Postimees.

The extreme race is based on the story of Pheidippides, an Athenian messenger sent to Sparta in 490 BC to seek help against the Persians in the Battle of Marathon. It has been run every year since 1983.

Out of the 351 participants, only 128 completed this year's race before the 36-hour cut-off.
