Yup, I agree for the most part. He reminds me a lot of Monty Python´s Eric Idle. Really quite English looking.

They both deviated heavily. The new one probably fit the tone of Dahl's book more. And it was far from being terrible. I think the older one deviated from the book in some ways (like having the goose instead of the squirrels) due to the limited technology at the time. Some of the music from the Wilder version was so beautiful and timeless, though. The newer version just decided to fill those parts with cute, but rather uninspiring songs that seemed a bit too tied to pop culture fads. I also like the fact that Wilder played a man and not an eccentric Michael Jackson-esque creep.

You can definitely see Wilder's Jewishness, though. His face vaguely reminds of Andy Kaufman.

My oh my! I had no idea being Jewish was that much of a hit against someone intrinsically. If you like Depp better that's fine, but in all honesty, he didn't do that much except talk like a weirdo. (And I actually do think Depp is a good actor for the most part but he didn't "wow" me as Wonka.) Wilder sang and brought passion to the role Jewish or not. Like I said, both films were decent but I know which one takes me to "a world of pure imagination."
